I just got my hands on a translated version of both the Sailor V and Sailor Moon manga and am beginning to make comparisons. I've never seen the original anime, just that trainwreck of a dub, but I think overall my favorite incarnation is still PGSM. The base story's the same and most of the character relationships are pretty much identical, ( Read more... )

I'm perpetually confused about the whole Sailor Moon phenomenon/franchise/storyline (although calling it a 'line' seems to stretch the definition of 'line' when 'Gordian knot' would seem more apropos, but I digress). The 18/14 thing is definitely eeky, though. Boost it four more years and it won't seem quite so squicky, but 14 is that really questionable age (at 35, I have contemporaries who were married at that age and this was not unusual for their communities. Granted, this was in places like Kentucky and West Virginia, but it still exists and iirc there are still states whose age of consent is 14. It makes no societal sense but a generation or so ago it wasn't the case ( ... )

I think one reason why Sailor Moon and her cohorts are all 14 is because the manga was aimed at 14 year old girls when it first came out. Similar to how a lot of the early console RPGs were 14-18 year old heroes because of that male gamer demographic. But then again, if a woman's 25 and unmarried, by traditional Japanese standards, she's an old maid, so it could also be a cultural thing.

What first attracted me to the series is because I was so used to Western heroes. You've got people like Superman and Batman who just pop up, fight crime and do what they have to do. The first time I saw Sailor Moon in action, she fell, hurt herself and said, "screw this, I don't want to do this anymore" and tried to run away. It just struck me as a more sane reaction and allowed me to relate to her more than say Superman and his plastic hair.

I demand scans of such crazy pedoriffic scenes!

I'm a fan of the anime, but never read the original manga. I always wondered how different they were in comparison. I thought it was fairly innocent, but.. I guess not?

Onemanga.com has translated chapters 1-8. I think it tries to be fairly innocent, but it just has this layer of ickiness tossed on top of it... you know like how some authors at ff.net use things like abusive parents or sexual abuse or "zomg I'm pregnant!" to further their OTP.

Oh ewww. That's just so freaking wrong. Honestly, it worries me. If the target audience is teenage girls - this isn't setting a very good example. If I were a parent of a Hannah Montana aged fan, and found my kid reading this I would not be a happy camper. We'd definitely have to have a talk about why this is very not cool.

On the other hand, I was reading VC Andrews at 12 and I guess I didn't end up sleeping with every dude under the sun including my brother, so maybe it's not that big of a deal lol.

I think what bugs me the most is how it seems to be poorly written. The whole macking it on unconscious girl is to show that they keep getting this deja vu of a past life and can't keep away from each other. Okay, but there are probably a million other better ways to portray that.
