Character: Zack Fair
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII Compilation

Personality: Zack is the embodiment of sunny disposition, or at least he tries to be. For all that death and killing are par for the course as a SOLDIER, he does his best to remain positive and think of the people he might be helping, rather than those he might be hurting. His only dream was to be a hero, while alive, and this is apparent in his actions at all times. He does have a tendency to be petulant and lose his temper when goaded, but to the average stranger he is eager to help them in any way possible. This leads to him being a terrible pushover, especially when it comes to crying little girls or coy girlfriends that think that, while the flower cart is nice... she wants a nicer one.

Despite the extreme ideals he aspires to, however, in the later years of his life he’s gotten to be fairly shrewd. He is completely aware of how simple he seems to others, and empathizes with people because of his objective view on life (when not thinking about his own problems, of course). If all else fails, he admits he's simplistic in his ideals. Many of the obstacles that make him doubt himself, after all, are outside forces with near-impossible odds - and he realizes this. This doesn’t keep himself from being very critical of his failures. Failure is his biggest fear, even on the smallest scale, so if he realizes he’s misjudged a situation he works doubletime to make up for it.

That being said, Zack is obnoxious, clingy, and prone to rough-housing. He is also a terrible flirt - until someone flirts back and he babbles like a confused gaping fish. Laid back about everything that isn’t work - work for him, that is, not specifically the way he earns money - he isn't afraid to cry or show emotion in front of others, because honesty is the best policy, in his opinion. ...Usually.

History: Final Fantasy Wiki Page. Taken from the moment he turns away from Cloud to face his death.

Abilities: Zack is fairly skilled in using materia, his world's method of magic casting, but excels mostly in melee fighting - both hand-to-hand as well as broadsword. Being in Shinra's SOLDIER program, he has been genetically enhanced/altered and therefore has heightened speed, strength, and senses. His eyes glow as a side effect of this.

Sample writing: Zack blinked the weariness from his eyes and hoisted his charge back up to rest against his shoulder, taking careful steps past the recently fallen bodies of five more men. They’d started out just past dusk, working their way south, as best he could reckon, across the Nibelheim plains, weaving through any strips of forest he could find. Despite the cover, however, pockets of infantry kept popping up everywhere. He tried not to think of the young men’s families with each blow he’d dealt - by fist, not sword. It didn’t seem right to wet a symbol of honor with the blood of people being sent to their deaths by their superiors just because it was their job. But now it was almost dawn, and if this was how it was going to be for the next... however long to Midgar, well.

He wasn’t sure how long it’d been since he last ate or drank, either, and if he didn’t find something soon it’d probably start taxing his strength. And if he didn’t find a way to feed Cloud... He glanced at the younger man, whose eyes were distant and glazed. The only responses he’d managed to get out of him were muffled noises and a few shaky footsteps while dragging him along. He looked bad enough as it was, and Zack didn’t think he could take losing yet another person important to him.

One foot, then the other. Maneuver around the fallen tree without tripping in the dark or losing grip on Cloud. Take solace in the fact that the kid was still breathing, and move on.

“You know,” Zack laughed, quietly as if to himself, “I’m real lucky you’re a country boy, too, or this would be impossible.” Silence, but he was expecting that. At least it also meant no one else had caught up to them yet. “We’re probably going to have to take on the entire army before we can actually catch a break. Doubt they’d learn to just leave us alone.” Shinra had announced their deaths, after all. Whether it was the whole... experiment thing, or the fact that they witnessed Sephiroth going mad, the company wanted them permanently out of sight and mind and documentation yesterday.

This of course meant that there was no end in sight, as far as Zack could see. They’d cross the river and make it through the canyons, and if he navigated right he could even make it home quick before setting off again towards Costa Del Sol. How the hell was he supposed to get across the ocean, though, with all of Shinra on alert and every freaking boat in the whole ocean being under their surveillance? An airship would be just as risky.

And Aerith was also under surveillance by Shinra. Come to think of it, considering how SOLDIER had been watching Angeal’s and Genesis’ parents when they went missing, seeing his folks would probably be a trap, too. It was either die or go back to the basement, and with one glance at Cloud, he knew he’d rather die. He would lay as low as he could until he could find Aerith and explain everything to her. He’d hide Cloud somewhere safe until he could duck pursuit permanently, preferably someplace where Cloud could get better. They’d build their lives back up from there. He’d send Kunsel a mail, then, too, once contacting him wouldn’t put him in jeopardy.

It’d probably take a while. Hell, it’d be months before they got back to Midgar, at this rate, barring any setbacks along the way, but two or three years of running was worth their freedom. He could pull it off.

“We’ll make it out of this okay, though. Right, Cloud?”
