The center of Sereitei, the city of the shinigami, is surrounded by towering buildings. The common factor here seems to be white stone and a belief that before one builds out, one much first exploit the ability to build -up-. The streets are often narrow here, thin alleys wind between the feet of the sky scrapers, and sky walks, archways, and staircases dominate, offering multiple levels of foot traffic.

Above this all looms the craggy execution place and the soaring Shishin Jail. Beneath that one can locate the general district in which most of Sereitei's municipal functions take place: the Gotei 13 can be found there, along with the famous House of 46 Chambers and one of the chapter houses of the Shinigami Academy, where young hopefuls train.

As the city slopes downward one finds a smatter of residential neighborhoods, noble estates, schools, and more. Eventually one will come to the massive wall that surrounds Sereitei, with its four gates and guardians; beyond it are districts 1 through 80 of the Rukongai, where non-shinigami and ignoble spirits live.

"Haa...." The sound was a tired one, a sigh that signaled that the weight of a long day's work had finally caught up with the sigher in question. His sandaled steps slapped lightly against the ground, but he somehow managed to keep his feet from dragging altogether. He'd been underground most of the day, but then this was nothing new for him since Hanatarou was no stranger to sewer keeping. It had been his turn to handle things in this particular section of the Seireitei for this week, inspecting the catches and making sure that there weren't any unwanted surprises.
A full day of being surrounded by... not exactly the most pleasant of scents was bound to take its toll on a person, and Hanatarou's nose was completely numb to anything else at the moment. He could go for a bath. He was just thankful that it was almost the end of the week, and then he'd be off sewer duty. Raising a hand, he clenched it into a fist as he nodded to himself. "Yosh. You can do this!"

Heading by the 4th division wasn't necessarily a routine action for the captain of the 3rd. In fact, he would hope to think that at his rank, he rarely had a need to head that way. But once in a while, something came up. Usually it fell under the heading of 'boredom' or 'Izuru has a headache', and while Gin was more apt to find a cure for the first than the latter, today he seemed to have in mind to kill two birds with one stone.
"Huwaaa..." came the answer of a sing-song voice behind the young shinigami, one that didn't sound all that pleased with the scent. "They sure ain't kiddin' when they say the job ain't pretty." Gin stepped forward, placing himself up wind so that the smell wouldn't bother him as much. He normally didn't stop to talk to the random seats of other houses, but this one talking to himself was sort of funny. "Y'can do what?" he asked, cheerfully.

"Wa-wah!" Hanatarou yelped, practically leaping several feet in the air at the sudden inquiry. He stumbled forward, and due to lack of natural grace and ever grabby gravity, he fell in a heap on the ground. "Ite..te..." he whimpered as he shoved himself upright, rubbing his nose. The little Shinigami turned to look behind him, but no one was there- but that was because Gin had moved around him. Hanatarou realized this with a start when he looked forwards again. "Ah! I-Ichimaru Taichou..! Konbanwa! I... it's nothing, I was just talking to myself...!" he stammered, bowing his head abruptly in greeting. It wasn't often he was ever approached by the other captains, much less spoken to. "...sorry for the smell...." he added in belated apology, but with the work he had to do, the smell couldn't be helped.

Certainly was a jumpy kid. Gin peered at Hanatarou curiously, nose wrinkled with a pout as he fell to the ground. The captain simply stood where he was, apparently not put out that he fell, though he did raise an eyebrow. "Talkin' to yerself?" he asked, ignoring the apology about the smell. It was bothersome but now he was curious instead about what had the kid so embarassed. "'bout what?"

Still on the ground, Hanatarou settled himself into a seated position. He scratched at the back of his head nervously as he looked at the ground. "Um... oh, well..." he began, an uneasy smile worming across his lips. "...I've been charged with sewer duties this week, and it's been really tedious- well, it's always tedious... but I only have one more day to get through, and then I can take a break." He glanced up again, and all at once seemed to remember just who he was talking with. "B-but it's nothing important! I don't mean to be wasting any of your time!"

People often noted that Izuru was a bit unsettled. Gin was probably a lot to blame for that, though those that had it in their nature to act like a scared rabbit would do so whether or not a fox was present. In comparison however, this 4th divison kid was downright skittish.
A smile appeared on Gin's face that was meant to be reassuring, although one could never quite be sure. "Oh no, ya ain't wastin' it actually," he replied, glancing up at the sky and scratching his chin. "I was thinkin' o' droppin' by the 4th to see if ya got somethin' fer headaches." Although he didn't appear to have one, come to think of it.

Not to make Gin feel any less special or anything, but Hanatarou pretty much acted the way he did towards almost everyone. He smiled with relief as the 3rd Division captain reassured him no time was wasted in this exchange, and upon hearing the reasons for Ichimaru's heading in this direction, the young 4th Division medic perked.
"Oh, if that's all you need..." He shifted the pack around him so that he could have easier access to it, but he paused as he was about to open it, thinking better of it. "Um... maybe you'd prefer something that doesn't reek of sewage," he suggested, rising to his feet as casually as if he had been seated for tea.
