So, a while back, a friend said that she was having a tough time at work, and I responded:I'm pretty sure that most people's relationship to work is an abusive one. Remember, though, that the essential skill of management is how to optimize the productivity of your least competent employees.

With that said, I think the power to abuse is inherent in the relationship, and gets stronger as employees become more interchangeable/replaceable. However, unlike, say, a romance, where people can and do leave one without another lined up to take its place, most people do actually need to have a job at all times.

I beg to differ - the essential skill of management is to optimize the productivity of all your employees, not just the least competent. Focusing on minimizing loss is not the same as focusing on optimizing growth, and will not produce the same results ( ... )
