Hooray! Obama won!

Jan 04, 2008 15:55

Obama - the candidate for people who wish they weren't as cynical as they actually are.

Obama - the one who, with Alan Keyes, was the natural experiment that led to the measurement of the crazification factor.

Stealing a quote from that previous article, Don't You Dare Kill Obama (... and we know you're thinking about it). The best reactions I ( Read more... )

I think that voting for someone because of their race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation is just as bad as voting against someone because of their race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.

That said, I appear to be a bit of a bigot, as I find myself wanting to vote for people simply because they are not white men. Why oh why did Obama and Clinton have to run the same freaking year? Too bad Obama wasn't a woman, or Clinton wasn't white...

Honestly, I'm pretty sure he had with his emphasis on hope and the fact that he's too young for Vietnam to come up. The boomers did good twice (Clinton) and badly twice (Bush). Let's pass the torch to someone who isn't still going "1968 sure was a crazy year, wasn't it?" so that we can have an election that is something other than a referendum on a war that was over more than 30 years ago.

The fact that he's multi-racial and grew up abroad is icing on on an already excellent cake. But it sure would be a nice face to show a world that currently thinks of the country as being run by backwards jingoistic idiots.

... had my vote with his emphasis on hope ...

I missed a word or two there. Sorry bout that.

Anyhow, I'd really like a politician who looks at the future as a promise instead of a threat, and that seems to be Obama's main message - "The Audacity of Hope" and all that.

His videoblog is generally awesome. I highly recommend it to all who are both big nerds and fans of hiphop.

Rolling Stone is actually a pretty reliable carrier of actual journalism. Unfortunately, they think they're competing with Maxim instead of The New Yorker, so they have to package it with half-naked Jessica Simpson on the cover.

tricking maxim-heads to read actual news sounds like a worthy cause, to me.

Yeah, that occurred to me while I was writing that comment. It doesn't hurt my opinion of them a bit that they compensate their journalists well.

For the record, Obama and Clinton have nearly identical platforms, even on Iran. Check out their Issue Dictionary comparisons.

Most annoying of all, they both support the PATRIOT act, which means that Kucinich will still be getting my vote in FL's Primary.

I feel fairly convinced. he's not Al Gore, but shit, man, optimism. What a drug to sell.
it's worth a try.

I'm worried about shit like PATRIOT and Ethanol, but I'm not convinced that the issues-checklist approach is really useful for picking a leader, anyway. it's reductionist, and never actually predicts the future.

If you could make powdered optimism that people could mix with a little watter and heat in a spoon...
