Rain

Ethan Cord stood in front of Amelia’s house, unmindful of the rain that soaked him to the skin. It had been months since she’d left; unable to come to terms with the life that he led.

He knew that the life he led had driven her away, but he didn’t have a choice. If it was one thing he had learned since the children had come to live with him, it was that he couldn’t walk away from trouble. The life he had led before had hardened him in ways that he hadn’t fully understood until the children, and Amelia, had forced him to look at himself.

He hadn’t liked what he had seen.

So he made a change. And part of that change was helping those who needed him.

Amelia hadn’t been able to live with the fact that his life would always be ruled by the law of the gun. Not only because of the fact he wanted to help others, but because there would always be someone who wanted to best Ethan Cord; someone who was looking to make a name for themselves.

She had left. Sold the bank and decided to do the traveling that she’d never been able to do before.

Ethan knew it was foolish, but he felt like he could sometimes feel her near him when he stood by this house. And, sometimes, the thought of her near, even in spirit, was the only thing that got him through the day.

He pulled his hat down over his eyes and sighed. Claire would be wondering where he was. She tried so hard to be responsible and help with the younger children. He also knew that she worried about him more than a young girl should have to.

He drew in a deep breath and released is slowly before starting to turn away from the darkened house.

A soft voice called to him through the rain and darkness.

“Ethan?”

He stopped in mid-turn, afraid to move lest that soft, musical voice turned out to be just another figment of his imagination.

“Ethan?” She called again, her voice hesitant now, unsure of her welcome.

He turned to find Amelia standing behind him.

“Amelia?” He took a step forward, reaching for her before he checked himself. If it was another dream, he didn’t know if he could stand it. And as long as he didn’t try to touch her, he wouldn’t have to admit she wasn’t really there.

“Am I too late, Ethan?” Amelia’s eyes shone from something other than the rain running down her face.

“Too late?” He wasn’t used to his dream talking. Usually, she just looked at him with her beautiful eyes and then disappeared before he could stop her.

“Am I too late to admit that I was wrong?” She stepped forward and laid a gentle hand on his cheek. “To admit that living without you is worse than living with the life you live?”

The touch of her hand almost sent him to his knees.

“Oh, God, you’re real?” He clutched at her hand, eager to feel her warm skin beneath his fingertips again. Before she could say another word, he pulled her into his arms and claimed her mouth with his own.

He wrapped his arms around her and held on for dear life. He didn’t mind the rain or the darkness anymore. If he was a more poetic man, he would say that Amelia shined a light into the darkness and rain and warmed him to the bottom of his soul.

She pulled away and looked up at him. “Does this mean that I’m not too late?”

Ethan looked at her for a long moment, just taking in the sight of the woman he loved finally back in his arms where she belonged. “You could never be too late, Amelia.” He smiled down at her. “I would wait forever for you to come back to me, Amelia Lawson, and that’s a natural fact.”

The shadows that clouded her eyes cleared and she gave him the smile that was reserved for only him. “You’ll never have to wait for me to come back to you again, Ethan Cord, because I don’t plan on ever leaving you again.”

“Well, that sounds just fine to me.” He lifted her into his arms. “Now, why don’t we head into the house and get us both out of these wet clothes.”

Her laughter echoed down the empty street as he took the steps into her house two at a time.

Finis.
