oh thats so sad that you were disappointed. i'm always caught between that desire for the undisturbed peace of somewhere like it used to be and not being sure that's my western sensibilities wanting them to stay quaint and undeveloped for my own edification. but yeah, the tourists and the monks is an uncomfortable image.
i loved hanoi as well! and the whole halong bay cat ba island thing. as touristy as it is, nothing can affect the beauty.
I'm glad the tourist orientation didn't ruin things for you.
Sad to say, but I could hardly enjoy Halong Bay and Cat Ba island because I felt like I was in a tourist mill the entire time. (I just got from Halong Bay.) Being out on the ocean really isn't the same when you're 50 feet away from about 6 other large boats. Walking in a slow line up to a cave with paved steps and lights. Stopping for 15 minutes on the monkey island so you don't have a chance to explore or see anything for yourself. It was mostly wasted time for me...

perhaps you should try togo then... there were hardly any tourists at all in the capital and i'd imagine next to none anywhere else!
