Comet McNaught, as seen from the Dandenongs:

"In recent times, there has been an increased incidence of flags brandished aggressively and this has led to increased tension. Our only intention in discouraging this activity at the Big Day Out is to ensure that our patrons are not subjected to this aggressive behaviour. With all this in mind and the aim to create a happy, peaceful musical event, organisers would like to request that fans please leave their flags at home.'' Big Day Out organisers.
While festival organisers today denied they would impose a ban, they asked fans not to bring Australian flags, prompting an angry response from federal parliamentary secretary for immigration Andrew Robb. "If they have got a security problem, they need to deal with that, not with the flag. The flag is a symbol of unity.'' he told the Nine Network. "Organisers have got it plain wrong when they try to hide our flag as if it's some symbol of shame. It's not. We should fly it with pride.'' NSW Premier Morris Iemma said.
Just so we're all clear:

"Unfortunately the media reports yesterday were not quoted accurately and we must thank the participating media for wasting everybody's time, including Prime Minister John Howard, Premier Morris Iemma, NSW RSL President Don Rowe, Keysar Trad (a confidant of the Mufti Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilali) and Burt Lane of the Australian National Flag
Association.''
