I'm not big into hanging stuff on the walls, but I would have never thought of that. Can earthquakes happen anywhere? I would have no clue what to do if one happened in Minneapolis.

I don't even think of it as "earthquake-proofing", I think it's just a good idea in general. (I mean, beds have been known to slam into and shake walls for lots of reasons, right?)

makes me nuts to see stuff over a baby's crib; they learn to climb when you're not looking!

Yikes. Our big framed thing we had over our bed is currently in storage waiting to go over our bed in our next house. Minnesota....
