Maybe your toenail will fall off. Don't tell Chris if it does, because the last time I broke a toe, my toenail bruised and fell off, and he tried to convince me to give it to him so he'd have a copy of my DNA.

Anyway, I guess a bruised toenail is better than frostbite? My grandfather had diabetes, so of course he had really poor circulation. He always wore socks because his feet were cold. One day my grandmother noticed a distinct smell wafting around my grandfather's feet. Apparently, his toe has been hurting for a very long time, but for as yet undetermined reasons he decided not to actually tell anyone. When she made him take off his sock, his toe was completely black and very stinky. His circulation was so poor that he'd managed to get gangrene. I thought I'd share that fun bit of information.

Your mom told me that story with all the gruesome gestures and facial expressions that only your mom can make during a story. It was hilarious, especially when she told me about the betting pool your relatives had as to when his toe was going to fall off.

Completely disgusting, but a great story. He can be known as the Grandfather of the Nine Toes.
