I tend to subscribe to the theory that, well, things are wrong in this book. I don't mean, "OMFG JKR U SUX!1!" I mean...

Okay, well the first look at Harry is him asleep. I'm not saying it's a dream, but with all the subplots involving dreams, memories, love potions, etc. it seems as if there's a strong theme of altered states.

One of the biggest things that bothered me in this book was Tonks' characterization. See, I love Tonks - and it just felt off. I don't think I've spoken to anyone about it that doesn't agree that it's just odd.

I think your theory could be true - and I also think there's a lot more going on beneath the surface of what we saw, for everyone. JK did once say that 6 and 7 will read like two halves of the same book so yeah, I think we've only got half the story right now ( ... )

Yeah. I'm just trying to find some way to sort of settle the weirdness of Tonks in HBP without the Tonks-is-evil bit, which I have to admit has some decent evidence.

I've kind of steered clear of a lot of the drama, mostly because most of my flist is rather like me and happy to go on writing the pre-series Remus/Sirius we've been writing all this time anyway. I've caught a bit on the FA boards here and there, but I mostly stick to canon questiony discussiony stuff there.

Oh, and randomly, whilst I am thinking about it--we are having a totally random, disorganized, and invite-only newbie chat meetup Labor Day weekend at the Michigan RenFaire. Thus far the mostly-confirmed are myself, VileDeacon (Chris), Tim, TavernWench, and Dhampire73, plus SkyPiglet and Keator who are clannies with Chris and me. If you would like to come, you are more than welcome (and I think we might still have room in our car!).

You know, since Tonks did get hit with a nasty curse, why couldn't it have been one with some late-onset consequences? Some form of Imperius, maybe? I also found her quick-onset deep depression to be very strange . . .

JKR said herself that she doesn't read the books. So it's one hell of a mistake. This Tonks isn't even clumsy in this book. I hope it is Peter disquised as her, although, if it is Peter, how is he getting into the Order HQ?

And then at the end she's back to her normal self.

Maybe there was a delayed reponse to trauma/guilt at the end of OOTP?

Sorry, but, I mean, I read through OotP and...You know, when I picked up HBP, I had forgotten that Tonks existed. I remembered who Mundungus was, but... Tonks for me seemed...not-very-big. Even in HBP she seemed not-very-big. It was more like... somewhere in the background of self-centered Harry-ness, some of the supporting characters got together without his knowledge.

And,...Harry is not the most observant person ever, so to me that seems more likely.

Well, I'm not knocking their getting together or anything. I'm just unsettled by the whole overall sudden weirdness of Tonks that seemed to come out of nowhere. I'm not saying I'm right, but it's an idea to toss around. I like it a bit better than Tonks-is-evil, anyway.

My suggestion is maybe Remus was just brooding after sirius' death and finally decided that he couldn't let himself get close to tonks because people he loves (James, Lily, and Sirius) tend to end up dead. so he claimed it was because of the werewolf thing (a weak argument really) and told her he had to break it off...I imagine Ginny will be similarly depressed at teh beginning of book 7 if we see her

Incidentally I saw Tonks/Lupin since the conversation in the kitchen the morning of Harry's rial. They just seemed too good a match

Wow. That really never occured to me. I always forget that she's at the scence at the end of OotP and she doesn't seem too bad. Then again... I dunno. Maybe the shock of Sirius' death hit her later than Harry and whatnot, and what with being in love with Remus, it all just piled on top of each other. *shrugs*

That was my thought too. At the end of OotP I don't think Sirius' death had really sunk in for many characters. Add in her unrequited love for Lupin, plus the stress she must be under with her job, and the Ministry scrambling to keep things under wraps, and I could see how she'd be burned out in HBP.

You know, I'm glad you said this because I had that same niggling feeling while I read the book. Nothing I could put into words but just a feeling that she was off in some way.

And no it's not because I'm a slasher, I can keep the books and fanfic totally separate thank you.
