I was tired of the same old quotes on my random quote thingy, so I added some new ones. Actually, I added a lot of new ones...actually, they're doubled. So check them out if you like. (Pretty much by refreshing my journal.) Most are about books and writing. I'm going to have to reread Robert Twigger's The Extinction Club because I know there are ( Read more... )

the trick is that boys and girls, even being raised the same, have very different modes of play. It's unfortunately true even though it doesn't promote teh gender equality. Little boys tend to play more violent games than little girls...even if neither or both are given toy guns. It goes back to instinct little girls tend to be more nurturing in their play...hence the suggestion of dolls.

Feel free to rage against this but unfortunately it's the truth based on scientific studies done like...a decade ago

I do realize that. I just wish kids were able to pick exactly what they wanted without being told what they want (and kids are suggestible; that's not a bad thing, it's how kids are so they can learn). Dolls are labelled as girl toys, making them "sissy" for boys, and hell, I remember being the weird "tomboy" because I preferred He-Man to Barbie. (Not that He-Man is really saying that much in retrospect...) Let them choose what they want to play with instead of telling them.

I agree. Children are indoctrinated. with gender stereotypes. When I was little I loved to play with cars and trucks and other "boyish" toys. My cousin also used to play with Barbie dolls when he was really little (he is now brainwashed though).

Thoreau the Western Zen master. Heck yes.

I agree completely about the gender programming. Watch the toy commercials.

All the dolls with various bodily functions. But the boys get cars and stuff.

I have 7 neices. The oldest is 12 now, and this is the 7th year we've bought them presents. Our rule is: "Within budget, if they ask for something specific, we'll get it, but if they don't they get LEGO or books or something else that the two of us can agree is non-gender-specific"

Yep. My across-the-board gift for kids, oh, about six or seven and up is I Spy books. (Actually I've gotten them for adults too, because they're so fun.)
