“Now,” Tatsumi said, leading him into the barn, “You’ll be working here from now on, but I’ve got to go talk to Sir Tsuyoshi, so I can’t show you what you’re doing right now. Just hang tight and I’ll be back soon.”

Left alone in the enormous barn, Ryouta grinned as he started exploring. It was relatively empty, though he passed a groom or two as he looked at the various stalls and who was where. Soon enough, he’d managed to wander his way into one of the back pastures.

He stopped short at the sight before him. A gorgeous mare was prancing towards him, bobbing her head as she whinnied. She was dappled grey and fine-boned, her coat gleaming in the morning sunlight. He felt a burst of admiration for the creature, holding out his hand for her as she came to greet him.

“Well, aren’t you a fine lady,” he whispered, running hands smoothly over her withers. She nosed at his shoulder, whickering eagerly and Ryouta bit his lip, sneaking a glance around.

The fields were empty except for other horses… and he’d only be up there a few moments… and she was such a gorgeous horse.

The next thing he knew, he’d swung his leg up, settling down on her back. The mare snorted gentle and all he had to do was click his tongue to get her moving at a lively walk. Even bareback, she felt completely smooth.

Soon he was forgetting himself as they flew through the paces across the field, trot, canter, and then suddenly it just felt like he was flying, his fingers curled into her mane as they galloped. She was better than any other horse he’d ever tried handling in the city, perfectly sound and perfect.

He came to his senses a while later, guiltily sitting back and slowing the mare down to a walk. She wasn’t his horse and judging by her caliber, she was one of the nobles. He had no right or reason to be riding her at all. “You’re a wonderful lady,” he told her, patting her withers.

“Well, it’s nice to see that you can ride…” A voice drawled, and Ryouta felt nerves pinch in the back of his neck as he whipped his head to the side in surprise. To her credit, the mare didn’t even stir a muscle. “I’m glad you like my horse.”

A young man was leaning against the fence, watching him in amusement and something that resembled approval, even. It didn’t stop Ryouta’s stomach from plunging when he realized he had to be in the Royal Wing.

“Your Highness,” he squeaked, half falling as he dismounted the horse, bowing as quickly as possible to Crown Prince Yara Tomoyuki.
