A/N: Some of these boys are perhaps iffy in characterization due to being ridiculously elusive (looking at you, Ishikawa) but I enjoyed writing it all the same. x: For

Kishi was so preoccupied with his iPod that he didn't hear the din his groupmates were making, didn't realize until he opened the door that the day would turn out drastically different than planned.
“Kishi!” Masuda appeared suddenly, flinging himself at Kishi and knocking his headphones askew. Takada wasn’t far away, bear-hugging with Casey, Taiga, and Noeru, hollering at the top of his lungs, and not far from them was Ishikawa and Yasui with identical stunned expressions. Everyone was crying and Kishi realizes that Something happened.
“What?” There was a nervous flutter in his heart, a sudden tension of hope, which he tried to hide because he knew better than to jump ahead. It couldn’t be, could it?
But all his thoughts and feelings were validated when Takada swung him around, jumping up and down in a jarred dance of victory. “We made it! We’re debuting!!”
And there wasn’t much else for Kishi to do but clutch at Takada, shrieking in jubilation.
Julie stood next to Yasui, lips twitching in amusement. “Congratulations,” she repeated, before turning to Yasui, handing him a sheet of paper. “This is the agenda for today. Your debut announcement will be during next week’s Summary shows, there’s a lot to be done before that. You have half an hour.”
She left them to celebrate in euphoria, knowing well that they’d all have to knuckle down soon enough.
Debut!
“Can’t stop shaking,” Ishikawa muttered, falling down on the couch next to Taiga. An erratically beating heart was hardly conducive to dance practice, but he wasn’t sure what he was even supposed to be doing today. It didn’t connect properly, the news. It was just too good to be real.
He must have said that aloud, because Taiga leaned over, quirking an eyebrow. “But it is real.”
“I know,” Ishikawa admitted. “It’s just that… You know, we always knew you would, but me?” He gestured at himself, skinny frame in baggy sweatpants and hair pinned back. He was far from idol material and he knew it. Neither was their group, really. They were still figuring out how to work together properly, he hadn’t ever thought that they would stay the way they were.
Taiga blinked at him, taken aback (and there was something strangely reassuring in that expression). “Well… but we only made it because we’re like this, right?”
“Guys, it’s time to go!” Yasui called out, gesturing to the door. “Come on.”
As Ishikawa filed out the door on Taiga’s heels, he couldn’t help but think that Taiga wasn’t quite right. It didn’t always work like that, history alone showed that much.
But he was thankful he’d been given the chance to try.
When they have a moment to breathe, Takada found Masuda staring at himself in mirror. The stupefied excitement had worn off slightly, and there was something contemplative in Masuda’s eyes. “Penny for your thoughts?”
Turning to lean against the table, Masuda let out a small sigh, the smile returning his face. “Nothing much… I was just thinking about how nice it is to finally have a name, you know?”
And Takada did know what he meant. They’d never really had a group name, the handful of them. Not a name they could call their own, truly. “Touchdown Of Youth Spirit,” he said, shifting to join Masuda. “TOYS. Casey says it’s weird.” Which Takada didn’t really get. It sounded nice, the way their manager had explained it to them.
Masuda grinned, nodding, and Takada decided that if Masuda didn’t mind, than he wouldn’t either. “I like it.”
Kishi stuck his head in right then, waving them closer. “Guys, they want to talk about the song, hurry up.”
Grinning at each other, they pushed away from the table, following after Kishi as they took another step into a new future.
“I’ll do my best,” Noeru chorused, bowing low and the rest of TOYS (Casey still winced every time they said that name) bowed with him. Taiga and Yasui had done most of the talking, leaving Noeru to stew in his own thoughts.
Eight people were not a small number. To get anywhere, he’d have to work even harder, push himself further than before, and the idea sent a chill down his spine, dread mixed in with anticipation. He’d seen this before, from behind. Now that they were stepping forward…
“I’ll do my best,” he repeated, turning to he could face the rest of them, hand curled into fists with proud determination shining in his eyes. They all smiled back at him, a silent agreement between them all
When all the meetings were done and over with (Debut!) Yasui finds himself getting drowned in a shuffle of congratulations. Never before had his hair been so ruffle, his back so pounded on - not that he minded, he loved every word, every touch.
They were all going out to celebrate and Yasui was the last one in the dressing room, loading unused practice clothes back into his bag, when something cold gently bumped against his forehead.
Iced tea in hand, Kitayama stood over him, grinning in a typical Kitayama manner (lazy, assured, almost overconfident if he wasn’t Kitayama). “So I hear you have big news~.”
“Kitayama-kun!” Yasui quickly stuffed the rest of his things back in his bag, scrambling to his feet. He hesitated a moment, all nervous smiles, before accepting the drink. “Yeah... We’re TOYS now.” He didn’t want to say too much more, too tied up emotionally to trust himself to do so without crying.
“Congrats,” Kitayama said, smiling fondly as he ruffled Yasui’s hair. “It’ll be fun to watch you guys.”
Yasui bowed slightly, mumbling a quick ‘thank you’, fiddling with the bottle as he tried to clear his head a bit more. “Ne, Kitayama-kun,” he began, and then stopped, feeling suddenly rather silly.
Cocking his head to the side, Kitayama waited a moment before prompting him. “Yeah?”
“Thank you,” Yasui said finally, biting his lip, but managing a small smile. “For… well, you know.” He wasn’t sure if he could say it, if it was something he was able to put into words, but he caught the look in Kitayama’s eyes and knew he got it anyway.
“How about after you’re done celebrating with the rest of your group, you let me know so we can celebrate proper,” Kitayama said, nudging at him with a laugh. “Since the rest of them are still so young. You’ve got my number, right?”
There was an almost menacing quality about that offer (Yasui had been out drinking with Kisumai once, it had been an adventure) but Yasui was flying too high to care anymore. “Okay!”
Kitayama gave him a half-salute as he left again. “See ya~.”
Yasui watched him leave, glancing down at the bottled tea with a silly little smile on his lips. It was more just the celebration than anything else - the reason for it, everyone it involved - but Yasui felt, for a split-second, like he could do anything.
“I can go too,” Kishi said later, looking almost grouchy before Takada started poking at his sides. “Whaaaaaaat! I am! And I look older than Yasui-kun anyway!”
“Don’t talk like that to the Leader,” Taiga said, mock-deadpan as he stole some of Yasui’s food, which earned him an indignant squawk from some of the others.
“Why is he leader?”
“Nobody’s going to take us seriously!”
“Taku looks older than him.”
“I think Ken-chan would make a great leader,” Casey broke in, though Yasui felt that this had more to do with the leer he was sending Takada’s way than actual trust in Yasui’s abilities.
“Brat, I’m going to make you eat your chopsticks!”
“Loser.”
“Guys,” Yasui hissed, kicking at Casey’s shin. “We’re in public, shut up.”
