This was...really hard to write. >>
The trip to the hospital was quick, since it was still the dead of night. Yuya was happy he wasn't driving this time. He couldn't concentrate on the cars streaking through the night. He and his boss maintained a slightly tense silence. They knew they had to get there in time, because they'd hit too many dead ends. In the end, Ryouhei was the only chance they had... and he was slowly slipping away.
They quickly made their way from the front doors to the room Ryouhei was in, a nurse coming to meet them. “He's on morphine right now, so he'll be in and out of it...but we've done all we can.” The grim faced nurse told them. “We don't expect him to last more then a few more hours.”
Yuya glanced past the nurse to Ryouhei's doorway, his muscles tensing up again. His boss lay a hand on his shoulder. “I don't think we should both be in there. I'll ask a few questions, you just stay outside.” She murmured, stepping in front and slipping in.
Yuya just stood there, not wanting to leave. He peeked at the other through the curtain, knowing he couldn't be seen by Ryouhei. The other was panting, sweating, obviously still pained despite the drugs. He was looking over at Yuya's boss and talking. Yuya could just make out the words. “I...I did see....” He gasped a bit. “The guy...it was a guy....he was wearing...tan hiking boots...”
Yuya could hear Ryouhei, but not the questions. He just wished Ryouhei would stop wincing and looking so desperate. Even though he knew it couldn't be stopped. 'Don't die...You can't die...No!'
Ryouhei was answering some question. “My boss...fired me.....he said something about his daughter....her name's Vanessa...I used to sometimes help her with...soccer...” Ryouhei got a little incoherent at this point. “I never touched her! She's j-just a kid...” He stopped for a bit, panting, and then whispered something to her that Yuya couldn't catch.
This went on for a while, sometimes Yuya could follow and sometimes he couldn't. But eventually his boss was patting the other's arm and Ryouhei's eyes closed. Freezing, Yuya stared for a moment, until he was sure that Ryouhei was still breathing.
His boss stood and made her way to the doorway, already pulling out her phone. “I've got a few people I need to chack out, Takaki.” She said, stopping next to him as she dialed. “I promised someone would stay with him, could you please do that...Oh? Inoo?” She was on the phone now, walking away, Yuya not even having enough time to reply.
He slowly made his way into the room, sitting down in the cushy chair that was next to Ryouhei. The other was twitching in his sleep, pained. “I wish I didn't have to see this...” Yuya whispered. “Why were you there...why did someone hurt you...?” He reached out, taking the other's hand and just leaning on the bed a bit, not sure how to ease the other's discomfort.
But Yuya hadn't slept well and Ryouhei wasn't talking, just twitching in his sleep. Yuya slowly lay his upper body down on the bed, nestling his head on one arm, the other still holding Ryouhei's hand. He'd still be here. He was a light sleeper too, so if Ryouhei woke...and his eyes slowly shut and he fell asleep.

It was some time later when he woke, brought back to consciousness by Ryouhei's pain-soaked moaning. Lifting his head, Yuya saw that Ryouhei had become feverish, tossing and turning, sweat dripping down his temples. Sitting up, Yuya concernedly took Ryouhei's hand again, whispering his name softly, still denying what was happening.
Ryouhei tossed a bit and then focused in on him. “M-mom....?” He croaked out.
Yuya hesitated for a moment before answering. “Yes?” Had this been any less serious or saddening, he would have been disgruntled for being called a woman, but who knew what Ryouhei was really seeing right now.
“I'm s-sorry.....” Ryouhei clutched his hand and Yuya tried his best to sooth him.
“It's okay...”
“N-no...I w-was never good enough...” Tears glistened in those beautiful eyes. “I...I'm sorry...”
“Ryouhei...” Yuya whispered, half shocked. “You were always perfect to me....I'm so proud of you....”
“Th-thank you...For everything....” Ryouhei kissed Yuya's fingers before holding them in a iron grip to his cheek. “I love you.....tell Dad I love him....”
Yuya caressed the other's cheek, nodding. “I know, honey...” He murmured. “I promise...”
Ryouhei smiled a bit and then his eyes closed, losing consciousness, perhaps for the last time.
“Ryouhei!” Yuya's anguished cry was unheard by anyone else, tears falling from his eyes. “Ryouhei....” He held the other's hands, sobbing softly, feeling his heart breaking all over again. “Don't leave me...Don't leave me....” He begged in vain, knowing he couldn't hold Ryouhei there.
Five minutes. Ten minutes. Fifteen minutes. Time passed, Ryouhei just holding on by a thread, his breathing and occasional wincing the only sign he was still alive. Yuya crying and just talking, whispering to Ryouhei memories of years long ago, of a young teenaged love yearning for his perfect senpai.
In the middle of one of these stories, Ryouhei's perfect brown eyes opened, causing Yuya's voice to die. Those eyes were perfectly clear, unlike the delirium seen earlier. There was a small smile, and a feeling of peace around Ryouhei. “Yuya....” He whispered, and Yuya's heart leaped as he realized he was recognized this time.
“Ryouhei....” He whispered, trying his best to blink back the tears and smile as well.
“Yuya...You've grown so much....so beautiful...” The other said, reaching up to brush at the tears. “He's so lucky to have you...” The smile grew, wistful and yet still happy. “Don't cry over me too much....” There was that familiar teasing lilt.
“Don't leave me...” Yuya whispered again.
“I have to, sweetie....” The reply was what Yuya knew in his heart but didn't want to accept. “I'll see you sometime again...but be happy, Yuya. Be happy for me too.”
Tears fell even harder down Yuya's cheeks. “G-goodbye, Ryouhei...” He pressed his lips to Ryouhei's fingers, like the other had before.
“Goodbye, love...”
And the light and the warmth that was Ryouhei left. He was gone.
Yuya wasn't sure how long he sat there. Seconds, minutes, hell, it could have been hours for all he cared. He just stared down at what was left in the place of his dear friend. A body. Nothing else, just a body.
And even though he wanted to howl, to scream, to mourn the passing of this soul he'd loved so much, something pulled himself inside. It shut the emotional self inside, locking it away, the cold machine left in it's place. The tears dried and he stood, letting the nurses take over.
Now was not the time to mourn. There was a killer to catch, and Yuya was going to make them go through hell for what they'd done.
Then he could mourn.
There was no going back, there was only going forward. He had a job to do. And a friend to repay.
