This is the first one-shot in a self proclaimed challenge (which is to write a fic for each member. Using words off my desktop wallpaper, which is a pretty heart made out of words. 8D) Next up is Ryutaro~ ♥
There were many words to describe Hikaru. Funny, charming, sweet, the list goes on and on. But it's hard to pick just one word that perfectly fits Hikaru. Yuya wasn't sure if he'd ever find one, but he thought that if Hikaru existed, the one perfect word did.
He didn't remember the first day he'd noticed Hikaru. Oh, of course they'd become friends and everything, but it was a long time before Yuya really noticed Hikaru. The way he laughed when something, anything was said. Even if it wasn't actually all that funny, Hikaru would smile and laugh. Yuya wondered if that was just Hikaru's way of showing he'd heard what was said. He loved Hikaru's laugh.
He noticed other things, like how Hikaru always, always showed how much he cared for Yabu, even if it was masked by a teasing remark. It was just another way of showing love for Hikaru, Yuya decided. Those light, teasing mannerisms were just another way Hikaru showed he cared. Yuya loved that about him.
The best thing that Yuya loved about Hikaru is that he never knew what to expect. Hikaru was so crazy and yet so sane, Yuya could feel his mind get all twisted just trying to figure him out. It was like there was no way to figure him out...Unless you were Yabu Kouta. Or Hikaru's mother. Yuya was neither and he supposed he must settle for Hikaru being his eternal enigma.
He did so want to understand Hikaru, to predict him. Yet he didn't want that all the same. Hikaru's ever changing moods kept Yuya mentally on his toes. It was like playing a game, though Yuya always felt like he'd lost the game before it had started.
It was almost unfair, he thought to himself as he watched best friend interaction, wishing it was something he could be a part of, just because it meant he would be closer to Hikaru. But that was something built over time, time that Yuya had never had with Hikaru.
He'd have to settle for just admiring him from afar...yet this was also something that Yuya was almost okay with. He'd watch and watch and know that while he didn't understand all of Hikaru, he saw glints of him, little shimmering moments that went unnoticed by everyone else, because they didn't look for them like Yuya did. The way his eyes lit up whenever a new JUMP boy walked into the room. The way he'd lift Keito's confidence up with just a smile and a shoulder punch. The way he loved the little sweet things of life.
Yuya loved being able to see those moments and he wished he could capture them, each a little precious paper star to be put into a jar so Yuya could look at them whenever he needed them.
He supposed this was a useless hobby, watching Hikaru like this. It might even border on creepy...but Yuya couldn't help himself. So he watched, searching for the one word for Hikaru.
“Yuuyan, you're spacing out again.” Yuya snapped out of his thoughts and quickly shut his mouth, embarrassed because he was sure he'd been staring. Hikaru was laughing as Daiki and Inoo pounced on Yuya, messing up his hair in an instant. Completely forgetting everything else, Yuya rolled, trying to swat the two boys away from his hair.
“Yuuyan!” Yabu chuckled, his eyes crinkling as the three boys finally calmed down. “Are you bored with Uno already?”
“Uh....” Yuya just shrugged. He hadn't been paying much attention to the game after Inoo beat them all for the fifth time. “Yeah, sorta...”
“We should play Question-Question!” Daiki suggested with a grin and they all agreed. They went around for a few times, asking a new person a new question. It was Inoo's turn again and he turned to Hikaru, eager.
“Hikaru, which one of us would you date?”
Yuya nearly rolled his eyes, though there was a stab somewhere in his chest. Inoo was so obvious sometimes. Yuya supposed he shouldn't laugh at the boy's overly dramatic admiration of Hikaru...he had feelings too. Maybe it really was just jealousy.
But then he couldn't help but focus. He wanted to hear the answer too, though his slowly developing sense of Hikaru guessed that he wouldn't hear the right answer...so he watched.
Hikaru paused for the briefest moment, eyes flicked over each of the other four boys, as if considering the matter.
And maybe, just maybe this was Yuya's imagination, but Hikaru's eyes seemed to land on him for just a second longer, just long enough for those eyes to soften, before they moved on to Daiki, eyes back to being cheerful as he replied. “I couldn't possibly choose, you're all too unique!”
Maybe Yuya was just trying to make his ideals a reality, but he'd been watching too long to truly try and trick himself. He smiled inwardly, that brief moment meaning much more to him. It was so quick, no one else would have noticed...but Yuya did. Because he was always watching.
He thought about it, wondering if Hikaru had just given him the perfect word, even if it hadn't been referring to himself. Unique.
Unique.
Yuya felt it came close...but it wasn't the right word. Not quite, not quite there yet.
Someday he'd find that word.
Until then, he'd keep on watching.
