BSG: I should probably have nothing to add to all my feelings about Laura Roslin, but in case I have been too oblique, which is a problem that I do not think I generally have, I LOVE HER SO MUCH.
I love that she’s so frail but so very strong; that she can think in terms of “best” in an intellectually honest way; that she never makes the perfect the enemy of the good, that she can think in terms of acceptable, better, and best without losing sight of or completely giving up on what’s right. She fundamentally accepts that life is worth living - every life, EVEN GAIUS FUCKING BALTAR - even as (or perhaps because) she has completely given up on her own. She’s one of the few characters I can think of who is, as far as I can tell, unique. There is no other Laura Roslin. I hope there will be more like her (Adelle DeWitt is a phenomenal start in the post-Roslin fictional canon), but as of now, she is fucking singular and I treasure her. Felix is the easiest BSG character to love and admire, I think; Lee is my baby who I relate to always, whether it’s exhilarating or excruciating, but Laura is my hero. SHINE ON, YOU BENEVOLENTLY MACHIAVELLIAN DIAMOND.
TVD: I have three favorites for TVD, really, and which of them gets the top spot varies from episode to episode. But I’ve talked a lot about Katherine and especially Damon, and so I’m going with Bonnie. I think she’s underserved by the narrative thus far, but what she gets is fucking amazing. We’ve watched her grow from not believing that she had power at all, to channeling MORE POWER THAN ANYONE HAS EVER SURVIVED and figuring out a way to get herself through alive to tell the tale. Her courage and selflessness honestly engage me more than Elena’s, as much as I like Elena as well, because Bonnie has a cause. Bonnie is in it to fight the forces of evil. She’s willing to go down fighting, but it’s not about being a martyr - she doesn’t intend or want to die, even if she recognizes it as a possibility.
She’s on a parallel journey to Elena in a lot of ways. She has this mysterious connection to the supernatural, she loses her parent figure and flings herself into the conflict raging all around them. But she’s not self-destructive like Elena, she’s those-fucking-vampires-destructive, and if it means she goes down with them, so be it. That’s always interesting to me, and it’s really rare for women, especially young women, to get such a story. But where Elena’s tragedy is that her innate supernatural connection is completely passive - to be a doppelganger - she’s the main character, and an interesting, dynamic one at that, but her role in the whole soap opera is very much as object. Bonnie is a subject. She has power, and she’s ripping through herself to use it in the way she thinks is right.
and okay, Katherine/Damon is the ship I love because it rends my heart in all those masochistic, Oedipal places, but Bonnie/Damon is probably the only functioning, balanced relationship either of them could possibly have. And they’re pretty. SO.
Bonnie is epic. Bonnie is a BAMF. these are my short, off-the-cuff thoughts about Bonnie. I love her.
HIMYM: BARNEY.
Barney is my fella. I mean, he’s the worst. He is. I complain about the way I can almost never get through an entire episode of HIMYM between the dubious-consent jokes and the femme-shaming and the body-bashing and he is ALWAYS the instigator. But, like, he is always the instigator. I disagree with the other characters on the reasons he is terrible - actually, I do not think casual sex makes dudes “the devil”? because if they did not, WHO WOULD I HAVE CASUAL SEX WITH, AT LEAST UNTIL MIRACLE LAURIE COMES AROUND?- but I’m endlessly grossed out at the way the show uses him to revel in how terrible, how humiliating, how painfully funny it would be to oh, bone a brunette in unfortunate shorts or what the fuck ever.
But I adore him. The bluster, the overdramatic, unapologetic persona, the extremes, hiding as desperately as he can that precious, vulnerable, desperately loyal little heart. He probably belongs on my list of unflattering character identification.
Dexter: It’s a close call between Deb and Dexter himself, but oh man, I so enjoy Dexter. He’s one of those fascinating non-normative perspective characters that I love so much - like Drusilla, like Alpha, like D’Anna, but he operates in a totally mundane framework - and it’s so much fun that we get to hear how his mind works. I actively like the voiceover because it adds so much, which is pretty rare.
