IF YOU GET ROOFIED, YOU DO NOT DESERVE TO DIE FOR IT.
Seriously. There was so much about this episode that legit triggered me.
I was pretty appalled with the way he in - in this episode, where Ric is doing his whole song and dance - dates his problems to when Klaus compelled him to do something. Um, really? Not the months he'd spent before that ripping Appalachia to bloody shreds? K then.
This. What. the. fuck. WHAT IS A STEFAN. The writers have botched this arc worse than I ever thought possible. And I say that as a hardcore skeptic.
But if there's any validity to the idea that Vampires Are People Too and they All Deserve A Chance because They Can Be Good, then the "oooh, I have a chronic condition that I'm going to have to manage for the rest of my life, MIGHT AS WELL JUST DIE RIGHT NOW" business is kind of extremely disturbing to me?Yeah, I get you. Damon sitting this one out didn't really bother me tbh, since I honestly don't think the alternative is any better - but the way this whole story was unproblematically framed
( ... )
And I do think with some tweaking it could've....not failed? I do think it makes sense for Elena and Stefan to paper it over, I just think that should be accepted as unhealthy and terrible. I'd have loved to have seen some parallels of Stefan/Elena and Klaus/Stefan, which would explain his behavior without excusing it. As it is, we end up romanticizing one abusive relationship and totally othering and burying the other.
Because nobody is allowed to self-destruct around Damon Salvatore except Damon Salvatore, and because we know Damon has no issues with saving people from themselves/screwing with them.
Maybe Damon finally realized that Alaric doesn't like it when Damon messes with Alaric's life/death.
Or maybe Damon didn't so that we could have that surpise shot of Esther doing it, lol.
No but really, how do Damon's actions at the end jive with his earlier statement about needing to take Alaric out, it being a mercy killing, Alaric wouldn't want to become his bad self, etc?

It is a bit bizarre! I think Damon could justify stepping in when Ric wasn't himself and he could frame it as an attack on whatever was in Ric, but not so much when it was Alaric actually dying.
I think Elena told him that it wasn't his fault... I need to re-watch the episode. But the way Alaric's arc has been compared to Stefan's, and yet Stefan is still consistently treated as if he's not responsible for his behaviour is just... bad.
We saw Bonnie's house! Kind of sad that this is a plus point, but there you go.

UGH, EXACTLY. ass-backwards.

Yeahhhhhhh. I mean, I don't even mind Alaric dying as a result of all this, but it should definitely have been more of a "this is so tragic because he doesn't deserve this AT ALL" thing.
Are the writers trying to tell us that EVERYONE ON THIS SHOW deserves to die? Because there aren't many characters left who are more innocent than Ric. Regardless of any deep-seated hatred motivating him, I completely don't see how you can be more responsible for killings YOU DON'T EVEN REMEMBER DOING than all the willful murdering the vampires on this show have done.
I just have issues with the LET ME DIE!!!!! thing whenever someone gets turned? SERIOUSLY. If anything, the visceral level of vampire hate that he WASN'T ACTING ON just emphasizes that he was DEALING WITH HIS ISSUES? Even with Esther's treatments every so often? and therefore was an *even better* dude than we thought.
I think there's a pretty strong parallel between Tyler's willingness to die and Alaric's choice not to transition.

YES! It occurs to me that we didn't actually get to see much of Alaric dealing with his issues. I mean, for a vampire hunter out to avenge his wife's death, he seems to slip pretty easily into the vampire's drinking buddy role, when really that should've been incredibly difficult for him to accept. Not that we needed lots of existential angst, lol, but I think it would've been much more interesting to see him consciously caught between these conflicting motivations (in the same way that Bonnie is) rather than Jekyll and Hyde-ing it.
OH MY GODS. There was soooo much Bonnie/Damon in this episode. SO. MUCH. And it would free them of the gross Triangle of Boredom
ALL IS GLORIOUS WITH BONNIE/DAMON. I love it so much because SHE DOESN'T TAKE HIS CRAP. Which, Damon is my special flower and all, but he is full of it up to here.
But, if they're vaguely demonic creatures, a la Buffy vampires, I can hold them to a slightly different moral standard, as they are predators. Liony or something. So of course they should care less about the raping and killing, because that's what they do.
I mean, that's fair? And I ultimately do come down on that perspective as well, but that puts me in an uncomfortable spot with this narrative because then I end up feeling a lot more sympathetic to Esther re:killing all of my favorite characters. Which I don't think I'm supposed to be. IDK, whatever, they should die. I just don't want them to.

YOU ARE STRONGER THAN I.

I thought exactly that, too.
