Hm... I usually read from the screen but I think that's a personal preference. If it's a long fic I try to stop the recording according to the chapters so that at least the different recording parts are the same "noise"-wise. Maybe it would help to break the story down in chapters and always record 1-3 chapters in one go. Don't stress yourself. You have time to record a story and it should be fun.

When I want to make notes on a fic I'm recording, I copy the text into a separate Word or Google document and make my notes there, then read that document from the screen.

I do it similarly. I "download" the fic into a word doc, make my notes (e.g. colouring dialogue according to who's speaking so I know what voice to use), then save it as pdf and read it on the screen. You can blow up the size so it's comfortable to read even at a bit of a distance (if that's what you want). You only have to be close enough to hit the space bar or the page down key.

coloring dialogue!!!!
what an advice- i just must remember to make a chart to remember which character is which XD
i never wondered about blowing up for size- i might fiddle with that too
thanks a lot for your good advice!

Yeah, colouring helps a lot. I read some Merlin stories a few months ago, and on the show the characters are often associated with specific colours, so I go with those colours usually, but whatever works for you :) it's also helpful to change font colour if you use a dark marking colour. One of the characters is blue and I always have to change the font to white to keep the contrast for easy reading.

And yeah, size is handy on the screen. For printing it would only increase costs, but it's a definite advantage on the screen.

I load the fic "script" (tweaked as needed) onto my Kindle.

I read off the screen, in Word's two-page reading mode so I just have to hit the space bar to change pages ( ... )

oh so you dont work the whole fic first and then go back to reading? you only do a part? - that sounds reasonable maye one or two chapters ahead each session
and yes marking it bold and writing down pronunciations is also very good advice

and thanks for pointing out my maybe motivation problem- i never even thought about that- but yes doing small projects might help me, i also dont like to post wips because... wips i guess XD

thanks so much for your advice! i'm sure it will be handy on the way to podfic

I usually mark the whole thing first, but again, that's just because I'm a very fast skimmer and I usually have lots of time before the house is quiet enough to record. :) Whatever works for you!

In addition to putting it into a google doc and highlighting colors for different dialogue, as others have stated:

I make the page size in my google doc skinny so my eyes don't skip lines. (the page size in google docs is "statement" I think.)

I scroll the "pages" on my tablet - no mouse or anything clicky sounding.
