“Stop it.” Derek snapped, playfully smacking Spencer's hand away from their son's Easter basket full of candy. Spencer frowned, cowardly pulling his hand back to his lap as his large, honey-brown eyes eyed the peanut butter eggs and chocolate.
“What, Derek? He's not going to know how many we bought, nor does he even need this much candy. You know, the correlation between children under ten years of age and the number of cavities --”
“Spencer,” Derek began with a warning tone of voice. “It's Easter. Kids like Easter baskets, and he never gets much candy.” Derek handed Spencer a chocolate and peanut butter egg with an exasperated look. “Let me have my fun. We're the Easter Bunny.” Spencer pursed his lips and grinned, snatching the candy, opening it, and popping it in his mouth without a word.
“So how is this supposed to work?” Spencer finally asked, finishing up his candy egg. Derek knew by now not to ask questions when Spencer asked things like this, knowing that Spencer didn't have the same innocent-filled childhood as he had.
“We leave the basket out for him to find in the morning, and we tell him it was the Easter Bunny.” Derek answered happily, adjusting the bright green plastic grass. Spencer nodded absently as he watched Derek arrange and rearrange everything in the Easter basket. Derek paused right before his hand dove back into the basket to adjust a chocolate egg and he caught Spencer's eye.
“Spencer!” Spencer pursed his lips again and looked up at Derek with huge puppy-like eyes. “What?” He asked innocently.
“You're not getting any more of this candy! Stop looking at me like that.”
“Looking at you like what?” Spencer asked, looking from the basket to Derek, eyes extra wide and glassy.
“Like... that!” Derek pointed accusingly. “Like you're gonna cry any minute! Come on...” Derek narrowed his eyes as he stared at Spencer, who was widening his eyes with every word Derek uttered.
“You're doing that on purpose...” He grumbled, handing over another chocolate egg to Spencer who had bit his lip and pulled his mouth to the side in a lopsided smile.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Of course you don't. You have the damn mentality of a little kid around the holidays, you know that?”
Spencer beamed. “You love me.” And with that, he took advantage of the small kiss Derek planted on Spencer's lips over the Easter basket and snatched another chocolate egg.
End.
