Dr. Oliver lifted Avery out of her cozy all-in-one rocker and car seat that Spencer had insisted on spending a ridiculous amount of money on, and carefully held her up to his chest to examine her body. He proceeded to unbutton her one piece outfit to place the stethoscope to her back as Spencer stood defensively against the wall, eyes narrowed and arms crossed across his chest as he watched.
“Her breathing and everything seems to be in tip-top shape. We just like to keep an eye on infants every couple of weeks, you know the drill...” Dr. Oliver spoke as he snapped Avery's shirt back together and wrapped his stethoscope back around his neck.
“I'll be right back with her vaccinations.” Spencer stiffened then as his eyes grew large, and Dr. Oliver left the exam room with Avery's tiny file.
“You've obviously never read a book on infant health care.” Derek whispered as he stood up from the chair he was lounging in and made his way to Spencer. “Remember, Henry had to go through all this, too.”
“She's not Henry.” Spencer retorted, immediately jamming his hands nervously into his pockets. Derek sighed and tried his best to relieve Spencer of the tension building up in his body. As well as he could in a public place, anyway. He placed a hand on the small of Spencer's back and tilted his head up to place a small kiss on Spencer's jaw. “She'll be fine babe. She's got your big puppy-dog-eyes, those bad boys'll guilt Dr. Oliver for the rest of his life.”
Spencer rolled his eyes then. “I don't guilt you over anything. I just have large eyes.” Spencer said with a matter-of-fact tone as if that rationale solved the entire debate.
“Uh huh.” Derek answered with a chuckle, patting Spencer on his shoulder as he moved back towards his chair. “You keep tellin' yourself that. You can get whatever the hell you want from me with those eyes, and she's gonna be the same damn wa-”
Dr. Oliver opened the door then and returned with two different vials and a couple Hello Kitty bandages. “Which one of you wants to hold her while I administer these?”
Derek immediately stood up as if he read Spencer's mind and comfortably positioned her in the crook of his arm. Dr. Oliver unwrapped her mint green blanket from her shoulders and rubbed disinfecting wipes over her skin, and all at once at the count of three, Dr. Oliver pierced Avery's skin as Spencer squeezed his eyes shut.
Not once during the two vaccinations did little Avery even whimper, but when Spencer finally forced his eyes open, Avery was looking at him with those large caramel eyes as her mouth trembled and she sniffed, and finally let out a cry as Derek wrapped her back up in her blanket. Her mouth remained in a crinkled frown as Spencer left the wall and took her from Derek.
Spencer held her against his chest and wrapped the blanket around her head as he supported her neck, and her crying immediately quieted to an occasional sniffle.
By the time dinner time rolled around, Derek entered the living room of his and Spencer's house with Avery's bottle, only to find Spencer asleep on the couch with Avery asleep on top on her belly with his arm wrapped around her - pink Hello Kitty bandages peeking through Spencer's hand. Derek grinned and pulled his cell phone out with his free hand and took a picture, immediately sending it to his sisters and everyone on the team.
End.
