Jayden crinkled his nose and sneezed as Garcia continued to apply the white makeup on the young boy's face. It was Halloween after all, and Jayden had to look his best for Trick or Treating. In fact, with Garcia's help, he was going to look better than any kid in town.
Spencer laughed at his son's discomfort as Derek rolled his eyes, but smiling nonetheless when he saw how much Spencer was enjoying himself. He just couldn't understand why the kid loved the holiday so much, he had never thought it was much fun back in Chicago, probably because a good two-thirds of his candy was always confiscated by his mother because of “suspicious packaging.”
Penelope completed the finishing touches on her living skeleton and gently pushed him forward to be examined by his fathers.
“This is itchy, daddy.” Spencer cleared his throat and composed himself. He was enjoying this almost as much as Jayden.
“You wanted to be a skeleton.”
“Yeah, but I didn't think Aunt Penelope would do all this.” Jayden waved his arms down towards the floor and looked down at his extremely detailed costume. While Penelope had been stitching and sewing it all of last week, Spencer had given her a hell of a time because she hadn't added the correct amount of ribs and bones to pass as a real skeleton. So Derek had to take him off to pick up some candy and decorations so that Spencer could occupy himself with decorating their home to his heart's content.
Coming downstairs this morning with a half asleep five year old in his arms, Derek stopped at the foot of the stairs and looked around. There were bowls and bowls of candy scattered about the kitchen and living room, strange looking dummies were hanging from corners, stuffed spiders draped on top of the entertainment center and tables, weird cobweb-type things hanging from every surface...
Once Derek found Spencer curled up and asleep on the couch, he couldn't quite help but grin from ear to ear and like the holiday just a little bit more.
Now that the sun was about to set and Jayden's costume was complete, Derek couldn't help but feel a little pit forming in the bottom of his stomach. He looked over to Spencer, who was sitting cross-legged on the couch, a dozen pieces of candy in his lap, with that cute and innocent smile of his that their son had picked up.
Penelope let the young boy go and he went to sit next to Spencer on the couch, careful not to smear his makeup or jostle his clothes. Spencer absentmindedly handed Jayden a tootsie roll and then popped on into his own mouth.
“Are you comin' with us, Papa?” Jayden asked, looking at Derek with Spencer's huge, doe-like eyes while he chewed on his tootsie roll. Derek looked from Jayden to Spencer, each with those huge eyes that he could never say no to, and winked at his son.
“Of course I am, kid.” Jayden grinned then and slightly bounced on the couch in excitement.
Spencer leaned over and whispered in Jayden's ear, “Told ya the eyes always work...” Spencer looked over to Derek then with a slightly less innocent look, one filled with love and contentment and excitement. And Derek winked at Spencer, too, but the pit in his stomach wasn't going away. The truth was, Derek loved this holiday almost as much as Spencer did, but it wasn't until they had a child together that he realized just how much he loved Halloween and Spencer both.
End.
