from the local hardware store and see if it works on the carpet/piling. It's cheap enough that it's not the end of the world if it's not functional in carpet, but if it's wet underneath, you'll probably know pretty quick.
Otherwise, the only people I can think of that have the specialized equipment to find moisture in stuff are folks in the mold remediation business (or similar). The guy that came to our place could measure moisture at different levels in the hardwood.
But stay on that - it's a bitch to have to do mold remediation.

Thank you for pointing that out to me. That will help me figure out if am actually feeling some residual dampness or if I am just crazy. And I am hoping to have someone come out after we "think" its dry it all up.
But if it gets insane and I need advice YOU will be the first person I ask
