It is interesting how our political process grows more like the entertainment industry each year.  When a successful guest appearance on the Colbert Report becomes more important than passing legislation, democracy gets scary.  No wonder Hollywood considers politics "show business for ugly people." - Dana Gioia, NEA Chairman

I'm so jealous that you got to study him!! Sadly, I haven't read his work, but I DID hear him speak at an NEA Leadership Symposium last year. The man absolutely floored me in his ability to convey the arts' relevance in society, in ways that are understandable to non-artists as well. He is absolutely brilliant; though the current administration's failings are numerous, appointing Dana Gioia is not among them.
