I don't exactly understand the Levenson issue & Murdoch & some of the names, but I do agree with your arguments. It's a sad, sad money-grabbing world we live in.
Lord Justice Levenson is currently holding an inquiry into the hacking of the phones of thousands of people by Rupert Murdoch-owned Newscorp. Including the voicemail of murdered school girl Millie Dowler, the relatives of victims of 9/11 and hundreds of celebrities. The most well known were in the cases of Sienna Miller (who had almost her entire social circle hacked into) and Hugh Grant (who was very vocal about it). I hope that explains it a bit better.
I'd say the biggest problem is, hm, not money but cronyism and monopoly, I suppose? Even if money wasn't changing hands, the Press Complaints Commission would still be ineffective because they're ruling on people they know and work for or with. And if you want a regulated press who gain ad sales but are still respectful of ethics, you need an effective PCC.
