Actually, renewing a passport is easier and quicker for us abroad folkses! You just need to print out a document from the webpage, get some photos printed, and then send those with an international money order (get it at the post office) for $75 i think (the price may have changed...) and mail it to your local consulate (the webpage should have this info on it too, and may give you a specific address). They seem to expedite automatically for expats, so you'll get it way quicker than if you are renewing inside the US.

I renewed mine months early, because i was worried about some travel, and got it back in like 10 days or something.

Having totally trashed your old passport on the way to its expiry just makes you that much more hardcore.
