x This tutorial is written with the idea that you know the basic techniques, meaning it says desaturate the layer but it doesn't tell you how to desaturate.
x I still consider myself a beginner at writing tutorials so if I missed anything please tell me.
x I made the gradient in this tutorial, I don't mind if you use it as long as you don't hot-link.
x I use PS 5.5 but seeing this tutorial is basic you should be able to do it anywhere
I used this screencap:
Then I cropped it so I had a 100x100 icon and sharpened:
Next I duplicated the image and I screened the duplicated layer and desaturated it, don't flatten yet:
So now I think my icon is just a bit to sharp so I, on the desaturated/screened layer, gaussian blurred it at a radius of 1.2 px, you can flatten now:
Then I used this gradient:
And set it to overlay 100% then I went back to the original image and duplicated it and brought it on top of my gradient layer and set it at color 100% now flatten your image again:
Should look like this:
Once again duplicate your icon and with your duplicated layer set it at overlay 100%:
And that's our icon finished:
With text:
With a border:
Hope that helped anyone somewhat.
