[The first thing Charles had done when he had woken up in a strange place was to gather information. That was a simple enough task when he had noticed he wasn't the only person around even if he couldn't see anyone. The second was to examine the new additions to his pocket

What's genetics?
[It's an honest question. If the word ever came up during Professor Raine's lectures, he hadn't been paying attention. Not that that's a very rare thing. No matter how brilliant his half-elf teacher might be, her lectures are consistently boring, making it far too easy to fall asleep in her classes.]
Oh, right. I'm Lloyd Irving. If you already know, then someone's probably already said this, but welcome to Somarium!

Well it's the study of genes, why everyone in a family look similar, but they don't look similar to other people. Things like that.
Pleased to make your acquaintance. [Charles' isn't going to mention how he got his information so he just smiles.] No harm in it though. It's nice to know the people are so welcoming.

I know what jeans are, but what do they have to do with why people look like their families? And what about families that don't have any jeans? Can't they still look alike?
[Again the questions are genuine. He hears the word "genes" and all he can think of is clothes. Sorry, Xavier. Science isn't his strong suit.
He smiles back, though.]
I think a lot of us are welcoming because we got here the same way. When you're lost in someplace you didn't mean to come, it's nice to know there are other people in the same boat as you.

I get the feeling we're not longer talking about the same thing. You're not referring to the trousers are you?

[There are some terms she's come to learn due to an event a while back. A smile finally shows at the next statement.] The Dreamberry will take a while to get use to, but it is very handy. It's the communication connection with everyone in Somarium, which is where you are right now.
It's nice to meet you by the way, I'm Amaterasu.

I would... if I had any students. I'm afraid I never quite got to the teaching position.
[The camera swings around a bit as he examines it again, before straightening.]
I would imagine so. Long distance communication with such a small device. [He carefully tries to pronounce her name correctly.] Amaterasu, forgive me for being so forward, but may I ask about your... [He gestures vaguely to the top of his head.]

Yes. With everyone in Somarium. [There's a small smile, fangs poking out before she cants her head puzzlingly.
Her..? A hand raises, lightly touching her ears before understanding.] Oh! My ears? That's because I'm originally a wolf, not human. I've just adapted to using this appearance from time to time since it makes it easier to talk with others.

[This place is like his scientific wet dream. THIS BEAUTIFUL MUTATION. Not to mention the evolutionary processes behind a wolf gaining sentience.]
That is amazing! That's a very groovy ability you've got there.

A professor of genetics? It's a pleasure to meet you then. I'm Doctor Naomi Hunter. [Take that, Javert.] My degree was also in genetics.
What's your specific area of study?
Reply
Oh, that's great to hear, Dr. Hunter! My area of interest is evolutionary and population genetics, particularly the mutations involved.
What about yours?
Reply
Mutations? How interesting. [And while most people would likely say that phrase in a sarcastic and very uninterested way, Naomi is all honesty. Genetics is her one passion in life and it shows in the way her eyes light up while he speaks.] My doctorate was in nanotechnology-based gene therapy, so our specialties are more than just a little different.
What got you into that line of work, Professor?
Reply
[Nanotechnology came after his time so he breaks the word down mentally to figure out what it might mean.] It's fascinating to consider the advances our field has made over the years.
I've always been interested about what was responsible for the way we looked, why certain traits ran in families, things like that. What about you, doctor?

I admit I did a bit of research before introducing myself, rather than asking for answers on here first.
It is a pleasure to meet you Alice. [He does a little bow too, following her curtsy.]

Oh! I suppose Somarium is very much like that! Years and years can pass here but barely any time will have passed at home! Why, if I go back to Oxford I'll be seven and a half again! Oh! I do wonder if it shall be winter there too! I do hope I remember everything! I would love to tell about all the people I've met and the things I've learnt!
I've learnt so ( ... )

U-Um t-tha-that is... I-I [She's flustered, realizing how she probably just bored the professor.]

[ then again, that may just... be Suzaku's problem, but HEY.
might as well: ] I'm Suzaku Kururugi, an... [ hm. ] ex-knight of the Britannian Empire. [ because he's the knight of no one. ] It's nice to meet you.
Reply
[He tilts his head.]
Do you mean the British Empire? [Charles thinks that he doesn't look British and in the glory days of the Empire he didn't think they allowed foreigners to become a knight even if Suzaku is no longer one.]
Reply
[ ... staring. ] No, I mean the Britannian Empire... the Holy Britannian Empire, ruled by Empress Nunnally. I'm... are they similar?
[ brb so confused. HE'S NEVER HEARD OF BRITISH ANYTHING, but that's... the norm around here, sadly. ]

I haven't heard of that before. But then again, maybe it is something after my time?
