Right at this very moment, I'm luxuriating in that feeling you have just after you've read a good book, when you may not be actively thinking about it, but somewhere your mind is digesting it, and you still feel a little altered from reading it.

I haven't yet seen Coraline, but I want to. Gaiman posted a link to an article somewhere a few weeks ago which talks about taking younger kids to see scary things and how that is actually a benefit -- that perhaps we shelter kids from scary things too much these days. Kids are very good at seeing the moral allegory, even if they don't vocalize it, and it gives them a foundation for dealing with the real life scary things. That was what the article said, in gyst, which I found really intriguing.

Oh that is intriguing. I think he's probably right, but does it count for really young kids? Like babies, and toddlers? Because...scariness aside, I'm not sure they would have been able to understand the film at all. There was a lot of fidgeting and crying, and I think quite a few parents were all 'oh...this is not what we thought it was ( ... )

I agree re: the imagination filter of books. I find that very true in that I can read scary books but I'm not a fan of gory scary movies.

I agree that the subject matter is probably a bit much for young young children. I think the age limit would be more like 7 or 8 years old and above, just based on my experiences with my niece and nephew. I really have to see the movie to make a judgment, but based on the book, that's where I'd put it at. :)
