Aight. offspeed did this...meme, I guess. Of pet peeves in fanfic. I don't have a particular number of things that bother me, but let's just start listing the things that really bug me in fanfic (specifically MLB RPS but it is pretty all-encompassing).

1. INSTA-PORN! Okay, and by that I mean. Two dudes just jump right in bed within ten minutes of ( Read more... )

WORD on 1 and 2, but most especially 2. The handful of fanfic writers whose work I enjoy all excel at remembering there is a world of people outside and around their main characters.

Ugh I think it's mostly because people are lazy. They're all "ew effort". A writer doesn't have to be spectacular but I think I enjoy fic where you have good characters more than if it has the best writing, because you can tell the writer put TLC into it.

MLB fic suffers terribly from the small sample-size phenomenon where there just aren't that many people writing it and those who do aren't necessarily writing 'my guys', you know? so! i agree completely with all of this ... and yet i read (and - embarrassingly - love) tons of fic that breaks these good rules.

;D

I admit that I've found it very hard to get into RPS for...the reasons you've said above, actually. I've read a few fics that were great except for the fact that I couldn't make myself believe that they were "about" the people whose names were used in the fic. The names are really in there to just give you shorthand for the appearances of the characters. ;) It's good fiction, but it's not really good fanfiction (I've read enough FPF like that so it's not an RPF-exclusive problem.)

I really wish there was more original baseball slash out there. There even isn't in the professional end of things; there's a post from last year on my LJ where I asked people about baseball BL comics and there aren't many (and those apparently get the baseball wrong.) I've run into this with het romance novels as well where the baseball is so totally wrong that I can't believe in the romance.

This bothers me in away that is terribly hard to word. And again, it comes from personal (as in, fic, not real-life) experience. They don't have to hook up to have a meaningful relationship. They can have a

A what?

And I totally agree on #2. I love fics that have a strong supporting cast. It makes the fic seem fuller, and fleshed out IMO.

lol. Look at the timestamp when I posted it. That's my excuse. I noticed I skipped a number too.

But no, I was going to say that they can have a deep friendship and have it be just as ~*epic*~ and heartwrenching and complex.
