Potential new grad student

We had a potential new grad student come visit the lab today. He does research on invasive species and is interested in microbial pathogens. Coincidentally, there is a professor next door that does the same research he does. But he says he wants to develop a wide range of knowledge. He can do that through classes and reading, but I don't know how
