Sorry is this is annoying, but I want to try fire poi. I've practiced with my friends, but the thing is they all made their own. I did the research at shops near here and making them would not be cost-effective for me cause I'd also have to buy the tools. I found this one online, but I figured I'd rather get the opinion of people who know what ( Read more... )

For your first set of fire poi I wouldn't recommend going for the biggest head possible. Those don't state how heavy they are but my HOP ones are 160g each, which will be a lot compared to what you are probably used to. When I started spinning poi I had to modify my practice poi to prevent confusion!
My only other comment about these, apart from maybe yay for leather handles as standard, is that they only seem to have a swivel on one end of the chain, and a flat link chain like that will get twisted easier than a ball chain, so it could probably do with a swivel each end.

There is a whole raging debate about chains! Personally I like ball chains, because they run smoother, however they are apparently less hard wearing and there is the risk that if you dip it in fuel, the balls fill and spray everywhere (just don't dip the chain then ;))

if you haven't gotten your poi yet... the_undertow May 5 2008, 20:53:52 UTC
just spin your poi off before lighting so you don't spray kerosene/white gas or whatever all over.

i prefer ball chains because they do run smoother and it's way easier to do moves like buzzsaw/fireball with them.

you could also get some practice poi from them and they're weighted the same as the fire poi.

Luxotica is okay. I also recommend FlammaAeterna.com. Their stuff is really high quality and cost effective. The cool part is that Flamma has multiple sizes and styles of wicks.

Kash up there said everything I would as well... swivels, leather handles. Yeah.

Be safe. :)

Those look pretty good to me. I've never used leather handles though so I don't know how those would feel, I've only used metal hoops, just big enough for the two fingers. Those gave me blisters in the beginning though not anymore. I've also only used the flat chain like in the picture, and as long as you aren't attempting tricks where you purposefully twist things, they aren't an issue. I still spin quite awesomely with them. :) As to the cathedral heads, my first and only set had some good-sized cathedrals on them and even though I am small and girly I like the weight on them. I'd feel really weird going to one of those tiny-headed poi, I'd probably smack myself in the face from spinning too fast, lol.
