Apollo 18

Seemingly from the same thread as Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project, Apollo 18 releases previously secret footage of an 18th mission to the moon, while history indicates that there were not missions to the moon after Apollo 17. Three astronauts are selected to go on a top-secret mission to land on the moon to deploy communication systems that were set up in specific locations on the moon. Two of the three land on the moon, the third stays in orbit on the space shuttle, awaiting their return and monitoring the progress of the two on the moon.

As with most good horror movies, the scares and chills come on subtly, but the good parts of the movie truly end there. The concept is actually quite complete, a space mission that turns out to be something quite different. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that the reason for the secrecy of the mission has nothing to do with the space wars between America and the then USSR, but everything to do with the government knowingly sending the men into a situation they would not be rescued from.

The communication devices have the unfortunate effect of attracting something that begins to affect the two-man team. As they go to set the communication devices up, they come upon a Russian space station on the Moon, not far from their own location. They also find a dead Russian cosmonaut. Once this occurs, the 'horror' of the story plays up significantly and the two astronauts are subjected to the usual bumps in the night that lead to one of them being attacked while outside trying to fix the station so they can fly home.

The story truly gets frightening when the commander of the mission becomes infected with something that they can't quite identify. Predicatbly, at that same moment, they lose contact with the rest of the crew, both in space and on Earth. While frightening, it never gives the full effect that you may expect after seeing Paranormal Activity of Blair Witch Project.

The movie does well setting the stage for a scary adventure, but the atmosphere of the space mission never comes full circle and the campy 1970's camera angles break the fourth wall, as they seem hardly 1970's-esque. The ending is almost laughable and makes me glad I went to a matinee. What is truly disappointing is that the idea and concept for the movie had great promise, much like Event Horizon, which is by far the most terrifying space horror movie out there. I expected something along those lines and was disappointed with what I'd seen. As a general horror movie buff, this is a definite miss for almost any movie-goer.
