They were different then. Maybe better.
She still remembers the first time he spent the night in her room. It was close to the Holidays and they were both tired, lonely, and cold. He kept making jokes while they shared Chinese food. It got late and the words tumbled from her mouth, telling him not to leave.
Since then, they continued to rent two rooms lest anyone check their paperwork, but one room was usually empty. They could be different people away from work, away from home, away from everything that was familiar. Their roles changed once they were on a trip.
She liked when they’d leave a diner and he’d let his hand linger longer on her backside. Or when she felt relaxed beside him in the car. Or when they’d stay up too late talking and her clothes were disheveled and he was spread out on one of the beds, his eyes never leaving her.
They were different then, out on the road. Maybe better.
