In general, law school is a bad economic investment. lawfirmaddict.blogspot.com has the % of students from various schools who get a vault 100 job, which roughly correlates to the places that pay 125-145K + bonus straight out of law school. See appendix 1. Notice how quickly the job rates drop. That gives you a good idea of which schools might be worth your while. It's probably a bad idea to assume that you are special (although clearly D.V. is) and will be that top student from a comparatively weak school who gets the high-paying job. Secondly, as you have mentioned, 3 years of lost income and muchos (non-defaultable) debt. Third, lawyers are statistically miserable, and it's hard to chalk that up to them just being picky people in the first place. High depression rates, etc. This may be due to the unreasonably long hours ( ... )

For what it's worth though, I doubt DV WANTS a vault 100 job and the ridiculous stress and long hours that go along with it...then again, maybe money is King here and I am out of the loop...

I'm approaching this more from the economically unfeasible angle. 150K of debt and 3 years lost income is a lot to recover from with a job paying 40-60K. (you will probably never be as well off as if you hadn't gone to law school). If you don't want long hours and stress, law is almost undoubtedly the wrong career for you. Even at many of the smaller firms which pay less the hours are still long but they are choosing from more desperate candidates. public interest and government jobs might be alright on job-interestingness and hours, but I hope in that case that you are from a rich family that can support you.
