Traveling on foot was slower than taking a flying pokémon, but Cyrus declined every opportunity to capture one. Best to sacrifice speed for safety with such precious cargo. He cradled the wrapped relic as he approached the foot of Mt Coronet.

At the entrance, the cave where he had first met that trainer nearly two years before, he paused and looked heavenward before saying a quiet prayer. This would be the last he would witness of the human world.

After a moment, he pressed on.

Garchomp had appeared at her side without her even noticing, and the Dragon was now sniffing the wind.

"Can you get his scent, Garchomp?"

Growling softly, Garchomp immediately froze, glaring out across the channel. Cynthia's eyes narrowed. She should have known.

"If you can find him, I'll let you have a good swipe at him. That sound alright?"

If it was possible for the pseudo-legendary to grin, she would be doing it now. Cynthia smiled, and climbed onto her back.

"Make it quick; god knows what he's doing!"

Garchomp turned when her trainer asked for speed, looking concerned. Cynthia just smiled, and patted her head.

"I can handle it. Now let's go!"

And Garchomp exploded off from the ground, rocketing across the channel, her trainer wrapped up against her body, fighting off unconsciousness.

His choice to capture a Gastrodon had not been random, as he made sure Cynthia believed. Out of all the pokémon found near Canalave, only that could successfully take him up Coronet's winding passageways. Climbing would be an impossible feat with the Azure Flute to protect.

Cyrus stared up at one of the otherwise nearly impassable cliff faces. "Gastrodon," he instructed as he sat on its back, "Rock Climb".

The sea slug wiggled happily, glad to be of service, and made happy squishing noises on the climb. At the top, Cyrus patted its head. "Good job."

When she opened her eyes, the sparkling waters of one of Sinnoh's lakes lay before her.

"This lake...Verity?" Garchomp rumbled in confirmation, staring at something on the ground. Cynthia quickly jumped off, running to see what Garchomp was staring at. It was a small, empty box, lying on top of a pile of dirt. The Dragon was angrily sniffing it, then the air, before she roared in fury.

"...the Azure Flute." Cynthia murmured. "Oh, Cyrus...what have you done?"

She turned back to her pokemon, who looked livid. Her prey had tricked her, but he would not escape.

"Do you have the scent again?"

Snarling, Garchomp nodded, crouching down to allow Cynthia to clamber back onto her back. Her gaze was fixed on the upper reaches of Mt Coronet, and Cynthia was not surprised. A feeling of unspeakable dread was beginning to settle in her mind. Something bad was going to happen. Soon.

"Let's go, Garchomp!"
