History
Leaf was raised by her mom in ‘dinky little’ Pallet Town, as she refers to it. She was always very much a tomboy, even as a child. Her two best friends when she was young were Red and Green, and she never had any problems with having guy friends. In fact, she was arguably the toughest of the three of them. She was always boisterous and fun-loving and she started obsessing over going on her Pokémon journey at a very young age. As the three of them grew up, Leaf noticed that Green started to stray from their group. Due to her loud and obnoxious nature, she wasn’t very upset or disappointed - more pissed off because of how mean he was acting. She always had a close bond with Red and remained his close friend even as Green drifted away. At the age of ten, she got her first Pokémon, a Squirtle, from Professor Oak and started on her journey.
She was much slower on her journey than her two other friends - she preferred to stay a while in each town even after beating the Gym Leaders. She loved learning about the history of the towns and visiting other important places in each town (for example, the fossil museum in Pewter City). She also made many friends, being extremely social. She loved her journey, seeing the minor everyday struggles (such as forgetting her bag in different areas or being stuck in the middle of a rainstorm with no nearby shelter) as fun new adventures. Leaf often challenged gyms as soon as she arrived in the city, overconfidence ruling over her actual ability as a trainer. As a result, she had to try several times to gain many of the badges, but viewed the frequent losses as learning experiences. All of these situations mixed together resulted in her journey taking a much longer time than the other two.
However, she did eventually beat all of the Gym Leaders, aside from the Viridian City Gym, as Giovanni had been taken down by Red. After defeating Blaine, she got the news that Red had defeated Green and become Champion. She was undoubtedly happy for her friend, but worried about the bond between Red and Green. Leaf decided that she would not challenge the Elite Four, as she didn’t want the three’s unstable friendship to become even more strained. Instead, she immediately flew to Vermilion City, boarded the S.S. Aqua, and traveled to Johto.
Her love of the culture of different cities led her to travel all over the region. She beat the gyms of Johto as well and caught quite a lot of Pokémon. However, she continued to stay away from the Elite Four, due to her worries for her friends. She set out to travel again, this time going to Hoenn. It was there in Mossdeep City that she heard startling new from Professor Oak, who she had been keeping in touch with for a while. He informed her that Red had given up his seat as Champion to Lance and gone to live on Mt. Silver.
Leaf immediately flew back to Kanto, meeting Green at his gym in Viridian to discuss Red's decision. She began to berate herself for not noticing the signs and not keeping well in touch with the other two. She apologized to Green and promised him that she’d make an effort to see him much more often now. After a fond farewell, she went back to Hoenn to finish beating all the gyms. For memory’s sake, she never challenged the Elite Four in Hoenn either.
After spending some time catching up with family and friends in Kanto, she went off to Sinnoh. She was enthralled by the rich culture of the region and labeled it her favorite; besides Kanto, of course. Having beat all the gyms, she began to go back to her favorite places, actually writing down information about their history and taking pictures. She started to think about compiling a one-stop book for all the cities in the known world. During this time, she took plenty of pit-stops at Green’s place, claiming that Viridian City was like her own personal airport. Truth be told, she wanted to keep her friendship with Green steady, and so, often dropped by just to chat.
And then, Red came back. She was absolutely ecstatic when she heard the news and threw a small Welcome-Home party for him, consisting of just the two childhood friends and Green. They all caught up with each other’s lives and Leaf finally felt as if their friendship was back to what it had been when they were young.
In the past six years, Leaf has been continuing compiling facts and photos for her book. The reason she hasn’t finished? She's always convinced there's something more out there, more of life that she has yet to experience. She is obviously still an avid traveler, and is perpetually going away to see new sights. She is in the process of planning a trip to Unova, where she will undoubtedly make many new friends and get more information for her book.
Personality
As a kid, Leaf was always a tomboy. She had no problem with climbing trees, playing in mud puddles, and participating in other activities that most girls her age would cringe at. She had a huge imagination as a child, always making up games to play, and incredible curiosity. She was also a tad overconfident - as far as she knew, not even the sky was her limit. She was always very energetic, and had a way with words, leading her to be extremely persuasive. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and as a result, she had quite a lot of little friends.
As she grew older and went on her journey, she found that the more she discovered about her world and Pokémon, the more she loved what she could do on a daily basis. Also, as a result of Green’s deviance, she became fiercely protective of those close to her. Even now, she will not hesitate to fight physically or verbally with someone who has offended her friends. She’s admittedly sarcastic when dealing with people that she doesn’t like, and is quite prideful when it comes to apologizing for harsh words. She values her friendship with people highly, and will go to great extents to maintain her relationships. If the situation arises, she’ll probably be very oblivious towards someone loving her unless he makes it extremely obvious.
Now, Leaf remains very boisterous and very loud. She is very open and blunt with her emotions and has no problem telling people what she thinks. In this way, she has a great amount of courage (or foolhardiness…); she isn’t afraid to stand up for her ideals. She is very brash, and she has a habit of acting before thinking. However, she always knows exactly what to say, and can manage to charm her way out of trouble. She is always looking for ways to live her life to the fullest, which means trying out everything and anything. She’s quite bold, and due to her pride, will never turn down a dare. Her general outlook on life is very optimistic - she manages to find the bright side of any situation.
Sample I
You are leaving a voicemail message for Red.
Hey, Red. Leaf here. You know why I’m calling you.
That’s right. Two days, and absolutely no word from you, Mister.
I mean, what’s a girl supposed to think?
Here I am, trying my best to rekindle our friendship, and you just blatantly ignore me. You know how sad that makes me feel?
And don’t call me out on that obvious guilt trip. It doesn’t matter how obvious it is, because it worked. You know you’re guilty.
Alright, sorry, sorry. I know you’re probably off somewhere doing super important stuff for the League. Could’ve told me about it...
Just call me back as soon as possible, you got it?
See ya.
Sample II
A Pokémon, wild, tamed, or one of your own, has a crush on you and refuses to leave you alone.
Leaf took out her camera, snapping a photo of the beach on the route off of Sunyshore City. The few houses dotting the coast line made for a picturesque view. She smiled and took a few more shots before moving to capture the beautiful shore from a different angle.
A few Wingull swooped by and her smile turned into a grin as she quickly caught the picture of them in midflight. “Sweet,” she murmured to herself, checking how the photo had come out. This one would definitely go in her book. It was rare that she was able to get such a good shot, and she commended herself for a good day’s work.
As soon as she let the thought cross her mind, a Wingull flew directly into her face, flapping its wings frantically as it settled on her arm. Leaf stared at the Pokémon, slowly brushing a feather out of her face.
“Okay, Leaf, don't freak out... what the heck?!” she exclaimed, thrusting her arm away from her. "Just so that you know, this is a huge invasion of my personal bubble, you... flying Pokémon!" The Wingull merely chirped back at her.
"You're not leaving, are you? Go, go! Fly away!" Leaf tried to shake the Wingull off her arm. It squawked happily in return, content that she was taking notice of it. “Are you… I mean, you aren’t wild, are you? Cause typically, wild Pokémon don’t do this sort of thing.” Leaf glanced around, checking to see if any trainer was nearby.
The Wingull immediately went into a frenzy, cawing and thrashing about until the girl looked back at it. “Geez, calm down,” she admonished loudly, smoothing down its ruffled wings. “Gosh, I'm right here." She stared at the bird, then placed her free hand on her hip. "So, you wanna travel with me or what? You’ll have to stop the whole feathers-flying-everywhere thing, though. That might get a little messy.”
The Wingull, seeming to think this over, bobbed its head in agreement.
“Cool.” Leaf, blissfully oblivious of the Wingull’s true feelings, caught it with a new Pokéball. “That was the easiest catch I’ve ever made in my life.”
