~*~*~*~

6th February 1999. It was this morning that big brother woke up, his breathing fast, his skin sticking to his pajamas because of his sweat. He fell onto the floor, trying to hold on to anything he could. The noise of his bed-side lamp hitting the floor and breaking awoke mama from her slumber. She screamed and shook me awake to make me call the ambulance, while she was trying to keep the air going in and out of his lungs.

When mama cry, we don't talk or ask her why because we know she won't answer us.

Arriving at the hospital, mama calmed down and held my hand for comfort. She kept on whispering "Honey... oh Uru-chan... Everything's going to be fine, Uruha... Don't cry..." to me, and I found it weird. I thought that maybe those words were what she had wanted to hear.

But my hand only managed to squeeze hers, just to let her know that I also believed them.

When the doctor came out of whatever room he was in, mama let go of my hand and ran directly towards him. I was too far to hear anything, but I knew that the doctor brought good news because mama's head fell downwards and she kept on saying "Thank you, oh thank you!". The middle-aged man told her we would have to wait in the waiting area until big brother woke up.

Dad showed up 2 hours later, panting heavily and hugging mama really tightly when he saw her. They held onto each other and mama cried again. Dad only clung tighter and smiled at me when he noticed I was in the waiting section too.

When dad is scared, he tends to awfully talk a lot, and that's what he did with mama.

A nurse came to us and we all followed her to where brother was resting. Immediately, mama rushed to him but he simply looked tired. I stood there at the doorsteps to his said hospital bed, and clung to the doorframe. As I stood there, I could only think of unpleasant thoughts. Is this one of death's tricks? Can it really destroy our world this easily?

After some time, big brother's eyes shut down and dad left for work. Mama told me she would be going somewhere to bring food. We didn't eat anything since this morning and if mama didn't mention eating, I would have forgotten about my stomach's growls.

So mama left and I took her seat, just beside brother's bed. He still had his breathing mask on and a constant beeping sound was heard from somewhere in the room. It was like a loud thud, but much more piercing and icy.

I looked around myself to make sure no one would come and bother me, and fortunately, I had a good feeling that mama would take her time before showing up again. I took brother's hand in mine and just sat there, making sure I'll be fighting away all the nightmares that might come to disturb my brother. From time to time, brother would open his eyelids just a tad bit, then close them again, as if this simple action was draining away every remaining strenght from his body. His blank eyes would meet mine for hardly a second, and it went on like this until mama and dad came back with lots of bags and clothes. We ate the sandwiches and after, they decided it was better if I stayed with the Matsunori for a while. So dad drove me away from the hospital and from my brother.

Dad tried to explain the situation while driving, but it appeared unclear to me, as I got the impression he was trying to hide brother's imminent death.

Dad gave me a spare key so I could get my things to go to Hana's place. He dropped me in front of the house and as soon as I got out, he drove away to the hospital's direction. I did prepare my things to get ready to spend a weekend at Hana's, but when I saw brother's bedroom, I went in and looked around. His room hasn't changed a lot during the passing years. It was always those dull blue walls and the same baseball posters pinned up.

I layed down on his bed, taking a breath of his smell. After putting the covers over myself, I just closed my eyes and fell asleep.

And fingers on my cheeks woke me up.

They were very soft and caring, as if they were afraid to startle me, so I just pretended to still be asleep, being careful as to not lean into the touches.

I knew it was big brother, so I smiled.

"Aoi-nii..." I said, taking his fingers with my hands. I just smiled, eyes closed.

"Uhm?"

"Welcome back." I murmured, and he leaned in, giving me a peck on my forehead, then on both of my eyelids.

"Good night, Uruha. Have nice dreams." He said, never leaving my side.

And I slept peacefully, knowing my big brother was there.

*

Loud bangings on the front door jolted me awake. I untangled myself from my brother's bed covers and ran to open it, only to find Hana, who had an unreadible expression. She just forcefully grabbed my wrist and dragged me to her parents' car, both Mr. and Mrs. Matsunori ready to drive away.

We drove yet again to the hospital, and I was confused. But big brother's home. Why?

Hana held my hand and dragged me towards big brother's hospital chamber. But brother's home... Brother's home. He's home, so why is she running towards his old hospital chamber?

And when we reached the doorframe, just centimeters away from brother's body, there was no more constant beeping from the machine.

The only thing that filled the room was the icy, piercing and endless sound of brother's death.

End.

Author's note: it's been so long since I haven't written any death-fics =D feels like the old times! Inspiration came suddenly when I re-read the first part of this two-shots. Tell me what you think! I hope you've enjoyed reading this short fic.
