Trying out the TV show meme to get me thinking fandomish thoughts. I gakked it from everyone.
DAY ONE: A Show That Never Should Have Been Cancelled
I have had many fandoms that have been cancelled before major story arcs have been resolved but this show was original, daring, lush and textured - I screamed when I finished the second season as I knew long before I started that the show was over. It looked great, the actors were across the board brilliant (Clea Duvall LOVE), the mythology was fully realised and each scene was so dense with subtext that I'm still finding new information in every rewatch. It was like watching a tightly woven novel. In fact it was so tightly woven that parts of the show finale could be seen in the Pilot during quick flashes of dreams. Now that's writing! One of the biggest disappointments is the fact that the mythology (a mystery to the characters themselves) had not been fully explained when the show was cancelled (although you can access explanations of the mythological lore online thanks to Dan Knauf).
Sure, the show could be slow but I can honestly say the pacing never bothered me. I watched both seasons within a couple of days and never walked away from the screen. Nick Stahl is brilliant and I still want to jump Jonesy (yet another reason to try White Collar). It is one of the few shows where you know that the station loved the show too and were sad to let it go but they just didn't have the audience for the cost to keep it what it was. In a way, it's a good thing they chose to cancel it rather than gradually diminish the quality just to keep a version on air (but gah...sometimes, I can't be so noble - I miss it so!).
