Summary: The day after the battle in New York Buffy visits the medical ward.

A/N: Alright avamclean , here you go. I hope this is what you were looking for.

Buffy detested the smell of hospitals. Although technically this wasn’t a hospital but the medical ward on the Hellicarrier, but it was essentially the same thing. The scent of disinfectant hung in the air clogging her nose and she resisted the urge to twitch and rub it in effort to clear it away. She nodded at the guard standing by the door before she entered the small room.

Inside, the hum and soft beeping of the medical equipment filled her ears, but her eyes were on the man lying on the bed. White bandages were wrapped mummy-like over most of his body and she inwardly winced at just how much damage he had received. His recovery was going to be a long, slow process, but it was going to happen.

Eyes hazy with pain opened as the door whooshed shut behind her and a wan smile appeared on his lips. “Miss Summers, when did Fury call you - “

“You are an idiot,” she said sternly, crossing her arms in front of her chest and giving him her best disapproving look. “What were you thinking taking on Loki like that?”

Phil sighed and seemed to collapse into the pillows. “Somebody had to step in. The others were occupied -“

“Idiocy,” she said again. “You are just lucky Willow had transported over in time to help. If I hadn’t -“ she broke off as her throat constricted and her eyes closed involuntarily.

It had been horrible to walk in and witness Phil firing that experimental cannon at Loki. Her friend had been dying on the floor with his blood pooling around him and she hated the feeling of helplessness that she had been too late. She had run to his side and tossed the useless weapon off to the side. Blood had been pouring from the wound that penetrated his chest and his hands and parts of his arms were covered in burns from firing the weapon. Her own heart pounded in her chest as panic rose in a nearly debilitating wave.

He cleared his throat and she opened her eyes to see him looking at her in confusion. “How did you save me? I thought for sure I wasn’t going to make it.”

She let out a rough laugh. “I activated my personal talisman. It placed your body into a temporary stasis to give the doctor’s time to repair the damage. All of the slayers carry one now, Willow had just perfected them a month ago.”

“I’m grateful,” he said with a sincere smile. “I’ll be sure to send Willow a thank you note.”

Buffy rolled her eyes and moved to drag a chair next to his bed. “You’ll get to do more than that. She’ll be here later once she’s done with the clean-up efforts for the day.”

If it was possible, Phil’s face paled even further. “She’s here?”

The slayer’s lips twisted into a smirk and she nodded. “Oh yeah, and if you think I’m not happy with you, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said with a note of false cheer to his voice.

“Liar,” she said with a small smile and reached out to take his hand. “Seriously, Phil, we like you so would you please try to not die on us.”

He ducked his head in embarrassment. “I will try but -“

“I know, nature of the business,” she said, proud of herself that her voice only barely quivered. “But it’s rule number one. And once you’re up and moving again, you’ll get to show the Avengers how you’re not dead.”

Phil blinked at her in confusion. “Excuse me?”

“Fury told them you were dead. Like dead dead. Not even that you were mostly dead, but all the way dead.”

“Why haven’t you told them?” He asked, trying to push himself up only to gasp in pain.

She gently pushed him back onto the bed and shushed him. “Because until an hour ago I didn’t know you had survived. The talisman was just going to give you an opportunity to make it, not guarantee it. I haven’t seen the others since the battle yesterday.”

“And the Initiative?” He asked, his voice cautiously hopeful.

A bright smile blossomed on her face as she said, “It worked. They rallied behind your name and managed to form an actual team.”

He eyed her carefully before he asked, “And you?”

“Me, too. I fit right in with your misfits.”

Phil grinned at her. “I shall refrain from telling you I told you so.”

“Yeah, yeah,” she said with another roll of her eyes. She settled back into her chair but didn’t let go of his hand. “Now get some rest. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he replied, giving her hand a light squeeze, but he shut his eyes and settled back into his pillow.
