A Little Run Out

We took the car up and over the hill to the Birling Gap, where a lone fisherman was tending his lines and a trickle of tourists came down the ladder to the beach then went up again. The hill man has always fascinated me and I like the door in the hill theory as well very much.

Those are very cool photos. The cliff reminds me a bit of Dover.

Yeah, well, Dover is a bit further up the coast...

But, here's a thing, when they show you "The White Cliffs of Dover" in the movies it's almost always these cliffs between Eastbourne and Seaford that they show you, because they're considerably more spectacular....

I see where it is, now, yes. On the far side of Canterbury on the way to So'ton. I've never explored that bit of coast.

I guess they went for the rhyme.

And Dover is the recognised gateway to England and commands the English Channel at its narrowest. Mind you, down here is where the Normans landed in 1066- and the Castle at Pevensey has been a key military installation through all recorded history. The existing structure is the most substantial Roman building in Britain. Successive generations have added to it- and there were soldiers stationed there in WWII just in case Hitler chose to take Duke William's route.

Most of the hill figures are relatively modern- 19th and 20th century- but there are three that are older- the Uffingham White Horse, the Cerne Abbas Giant and the Long Man.
