Actually, Subarus' rear differential is 8" off the ground. Quite a number of SUVs don't have that clearance. SUV or not, one needs to know the limitations of their vehicle. I've driven down roads in the snow in a front wheel drive and saw SUVs on the side of the road.

The Forester and current generation of Outback wagon have similar ground clearance to a truck-based SUV. They're all in the range of 8". Earlier versions of the Outback didn't have that much ground clearance. The Impreza and Outback sedans did not have as much clearance as current models. I checked my Jimmy and it has 8.5" which should be enough. If it's not I'm smart enough to put something under the tires to get it off whatever it may be hung up on. By contrast, the average ground clearance of a full-size truck or SUV with four-wheel drive is 12". Lift kits can increase that significantly but that's true of any vehicle.

It still boils down to whether or not the operator of the vehicle knows how to "drive".

Yeah, you can't buy "smart."
