Actually, my friends have a very interesting theory that Snape actually didn't do anything wrong at all. He doesn't need to be redeemed, he was just following Dumbledore's orders and from everything they've told me it makes perfect sense (despite me not having read the books). Dumbledore begged Snape before he died right? Maybe it wasn't for his life, it was to die. He knows his death will be the last step Harry needs to prepare for his showdown with big V. Also, Snape swore to protect Malfoy, by killing D, he is. There's a bunch of other stuff but I remember none of it since I don't really care, but the theory is really interesting.
Yeah, that could very well be it. Just Rowling never makes anything "straight-forward" like that. There's always a wrinkle or a twist the reader never sees coming.
Usually it's one obvious thing at the beginning and gets twisted around by the end of the book. But she could very well have made it look obviously like one thing at the end of this one, and then saved the twist for the last book.
That scene with Dumbledore begging was really odd though. I remember thinking it didn't really fit with his character, and actually I didn't like it. But your friend's theory might very well explain it.
Just further reason to bang my head waiting til the next book comes out :P
I vowed to myself that I wouldn't read this post until...jasonvAugust 15 2005, 17:45:37 UTC
I finished the book! Since I hate reading, it took me a while to read this damn book (I took days off from reading - I think I have ADHD or something). I didn't really get into the book until around the last 150 pages, but stayed up from 2-6AM (it was after work!) just to finish it
