The Strike

Whoah, when I think even a for a moment about it, switching from Black Sabbath's 'Paranoid" to the US Marine Band's "Salute to Washington" IS a weird musical transition. Although maybe in those early 20th century days, listening to the Marines play was like attending a metal show (although I doubt the Corps would have been have as wild as Ozzy was ( Read more... )

I had no idea what this strike was about, so I didn't sympathise. My boss kept asking me if I knew what my plans were for thursday, and each time I'd respond with "what are you talking about?" because I'd completely forget. I think it's weird that cue expects me to sympathise, and sends me a bunch of information on what sympathy striking is, but they don't give jack all information on the actual motive behind the strike.

It's funny, supervisors are allowed to ask "if you'll be at work on Thursday" but we can't ask if you are striking. When Judy came by to take attendance today I told her to mark Noah tardy and to give Jill a check-minus because she didn't clean under her fingernails.

Good thing you asked me about the ride because I don't check LJ during the day (though I do read LJ comments).

I'm really not sure what to make of the strikes. There is no doubt in my mind that the UC bargains just as tough as Ford or General Electric, but at the same time their employees get a pretty good deal. Underpaid, yes, but a good deal. My contract bars me from striking or sympathy striking, so I won't ever have to make the decision to strike or not.

I was pretty surprised that there were only six people at the front gate. I don't like crossing picket lines, but if there are only six people, are the rank and file union members really on the same page as the union leadership?

The funny thing that struck me about this strike (har har) was this figure from today's Nexus- "the UCSB Office of Public Affairs released preliminary numbers that stated only 10 of the 293 workers represented by UPTE on campus failed to report to work Thursday ( ... )
