Synchronicity...I just finished reading IN DEFENSE OF FOOD and FOOD RULES a couple of days before this community got the LJ spotlight. So, here I am

I'm a new member too :) A chocolate cake with beans and avocado sounds interesting. Maybe just don't tell them what's in it and let them be surprised next time ;) Sometimes the 'weird' combos are the tastiest.
I made falafel from scratch recently, and it turned out quite well. I love falafel! I left the garbanzo beans on the stove too long to where all the water was used up and the bottom scorched by accident, but it actually gave them this good smoky flavor which I think added to the success of the dish. And overdoing the spices way beyond what most recipes call for is a good thing, I find.
That lentil soup with roasted pineapple sounds good. I love cooking with lentils. Ever tried a lentil loaf? They're great. And I made a very healthy casserole with spinach and lentils recently which was good too.
i love falafel, but i've always soaked the beans for 2-3 days then ground them up with the spices, then fried them. does the extra cooking step change the texture much?
I soaked them overnight I think, then boiled them for hoours (they take longer than most beans to get soft enough, which I hadn't realized). Then ground them in a food processor, combined with the spices and fried the balls in a pan with a mix of oils. Didn't add an extra step..just forgot about them on the stove a little too long.
i meant the boiling as the extra step; i've never boiled them after soaknig and before grinding up with spices; just soaked them and used them raw, because they cook when they're frying.
what's the texture like with the boiled beans?
i <3 falafel; when i was in college i ate it every day for lunch from a little stand on campus, and after i left school i had to learn to make it myself *g*
I'm not sure if you were being facetious about not getting the connection, but the bit where you start the sugar-binging if you've been sneaking McD's or other fast food may mean you're picking up on the HFCS in their buns and sauces (and sodas, of course). In people who are sensitive to high fructose corn syrup, it can trigger an insulin response that then triggers a sugar craving, that triggers an insulin response, that triggers...and so it goes.
If you want to indulge without triggering the cycle, you might see if there's a more 'homestyle' burger joint that can give you the grimy burger fix without the hidden dose of corn syrup.
I understand that one. Bad things happen if I stop eating red meat, but I really dislike the industrial meat complex, so I do what I can to buy responsibly. Luckily, I live in Austin, where ethical meat's pretty easy to come by, though spendy.
Actually, it's been several months since I've been to McD's, and here's hoping it is even longer before I do again. But I do hear you about the creme eggs. :)
