Today was definitely an improvement. I think my parents saw how shitty my birthday was, so they decided to help out and paid for a night on a steamboat on the Mississippi.
Originally they planned to go with me and my friends, but at the end they probably thought it would be better I spend some time alone with them.
Undeniably, it was a magical evening. We got there around 6 p.m. and that’s when they started boarding the boat. I’ve been on a boat once in my life and all I remember is me puking all I had within me in the Great Volga. So understandably I was a bit apprehensive about today’s ordeal.
And yet it all has proven to be a success. Just like our captain said, “we picked a beautiful evening for a ride.” The boat took off about an hour before the sunset. So we got to enjoy the dinner (about three orderings of all we could eat) and found a nice spot on the balcony to enjoy the rest of the night.
For about an hour the captain was explaining to us the history of the boat and everything we passed by. He said if Mark Twain were to walk onto the boat he would feel pretty comfortable because it’s just like in the good old days, and happens to be the only running steamboat left in New Orleans.
Anyway, after that we got to listen to the local jazz band play, that made me feel even more like we were on a trip sometime back in history.
Knowing my warm-blooded nature I was worried that I would get cold towards the night and that would subsequently ruin the experience for me. What I forget is that this isn’t Russia anymore, and the nights here are about the same temperature as the days, if not more pleasant during the summer time.
So to make a long story short, tonight has been quite an uplifting evening, and that gives me hope for the future.
Conclusion? I need to get out more. Preferably as far as possible.
