As the heat wave had progressed, the wearing of anything to bed had gone out the window. Even just the light sheet seemed like too much in the sticky warmth, and he was one sweltering day from going out and sleeping down by the water. It was the only place with even a chance of a cooling breeze, lately.
At the sound of a knocking at the door, Calvin just buried under the no-longer-quite-so-light bedding and mumbled against Meg's shoulder. "'S someone at the door. Should see who it is."
It'd been so unbelievably warm before that clothes had seemed so very optional when I was inside the privacy of our own hut, let alone sleeping. Now it didn't strike me as nearly as hot now, but it was still early and I definitely didn't care who was at the door so long as they stopped knocking.
Shaking my head and scrunching my eyes tighter, I lift my head a bit to sniff the air. Nope, no smoke. Okay then, whomever it is can just be there on their way. "Too early," I mumble, shoving my cold nose into the pillow, before turning my head. "No fire, come back later."
I blew on my fingers as I danced on their doorstep to keep warm. Even in my furs, frostbite was becoming an issue. I counted to ten, then swallowed. No answer. My heart began to race again. They could be frozen solid for all I knew. I debated a moment whether I should try to bust the door down, but decided instead to hammer on it once more.
"Mother, Daddy!" I shouted. "Are you all right? Open up!"
Calvin groaned when the knocking didn't stop with some indistinct shouting to go with it, as an added bonus. After a long moment where he was just so comfortable in bed and still mostly asleep, he swung himself out of bed and put his feet on the floor. Then he shivered as his skin broke out in goosebumps from the cold air as he looked around at the winterized cabin.
Winter, finally. "Heat spell broke," he said to Meg as he blearily pulled a pair of boxer shorts on. They had snowmen on them. How festive.
"Coming," he shouted as he got up and started walking to the door in bare feet against warm carpet that wasn't there the day before.
