SRS PRBLM, HANNAH. Not getting stockholm syndrom isn't about having "enough" strength and self respect. I'm surprised that you would take such a judgmental view there- it's a survival mechanism we ALL have hardwired into our brains. I know you don't MEAN to imply that it only happens to silly, weak women but you sort of are.

More importantly, snape was never dumbledore's man, he was Lily's friend. That was what made him so beautiful. Besides, i think dumbledore appreciated having someone around who didn't view him as this supernaturally perfect god- figure. he could be real around snape b'c snape didn't expect anything from him, he was always just cruising around with his own motivations (aka lily)

also, i don't think snape would hold lily against her will. he might have appareted in and grabbed her and harry and left james to die but afterwards he would have stood there while she cursed him and then watched her walk away all broken hearted and stuff.
