LA was basically amazing food and comedy shows for three days.
Friday: vegan chicken with zuccini and mushrooms in "gravy", Jackie Kashian, and The Funny Show.
Jackie Kashian in her one-woman show: It's a Terrible Burden Being Right. Prior to seeing this, I had thought I'd never seen her perform before, but when she came out I realized she had either had a CC Presents or showed up in a terribly editted comic showcase on the same channel. Very funny lady with an even more interesting life. The show was basically about her screwed family and how much she appreciated and reviled them. Great snapshot of her dad in a metallic gold suit. Good good.
After that me and Michelle went outside to wait for the next show. I faintly saw something gigantic about thirty feet away in front of a fancy eaterie me and Michelle has passed on earlier. She wants to start walking and I want to know if my estimate was right, and about five feet later: oh shit, it's Brian Posehn and his foooox wife. I was far too giddy about this development to walk up or say anything, but I was able to walk past him back and forth, smiling and giggling like the ultimate Just Shoot Me stalker. I'm really afraid he thought that's what I was. I'll be seeing him next month to explain myself when he will never give a shit.
After that nasty business we went in once again to see The Funny Show with Matt Besser and Andy Daly. Holy fuck I have never laughed so much at so many different performances. Phil Roman (Best Week Ever) hosted as Matt and Andy interrupted as "audience" members throughout the show. Matt was a video game addict with a crudely-made colostomy bag, Bjork, a pot-smoker, and The Pope, respectively. Andy was a vulgar, elderly stand-up, a coke addict (while arguing with Matt the pot-smoker), and a threatening party-planner.
Fake club sandwich, Fatburger, Assscat, and The Tomorrow Show.
Met Cory at the Assscat show. Jerry Minor was the guest monologuist, but I prefer monologger. He told childhood stories about playing "Slave" with his brother and other such. Besides the UCB guys, there was Sean Conroy, who is really great and should be looked into, and a former writer for Conan, and other people who were less funny. If you've been to an Assscat show, you know how frantic and hard-to-explain it is, so I won't. I'll just say it's the best I've ever been to (out of, 4?).
Then we all wasted time by eating and making fun of crippled people until The Tomorrow Show. Cory won a season pass and thus, got us in for free along with other free stuff and bought me a beer (whatta guy). The Idiots, consisting of Ron Lynch and Craig Anton hosted, as I believe is always. The most laid-back show I've ever been to. Lots of audience interaction/participation. Never seen Ron ever perform outside of Home Movies, which only nearly counts, and shit what a fantastic surprise. He came out in a striped bowtie and plaid blazer and made stupid wonderful and obvious amazing. He used props, I guess you would say, and it was hilarious. Brendon Small couldn't attend because he was interviewing Metallica for his new show (FART). First guy was a young man who would juggle quite impressively while telling jokes. He had a charm to him, and he both insulted and hit on me during his act. Next on was a horrible, typical comic, after his "joke" about all rappers being stupid, I asked Cory if he wanted to join me outside during this particular set. He did. "Welcome back," Ron said as we returned. Then a fellow billing himself as an "insult magaician" came out, which is a great premise and did a solid set. The highlight of the show: Paul Rust came out as "Party Artie" the guy who gets the party started. He told us to get excited and threw candy at us as he gradually broke down emotionally. He pulled me up on stage for the "Brain Drain", luckily Homer Simpson's boss and names of the five Beatles didn't escape me then. As soon as I jumped off-stage with my Laffy Taffy (I ate it on the plane!). He whimpered and cried and drooled his way off the stage. Beautiful. The next guy came out in some sequined pants and red velvet get-up. He yelled his jokes, scared me, sang a song about loving Asian babies, and performed a delightful rap with his foreign friend wearing a silver space-suit. Ron and Craig came out to wrap it up. Craig hit on me (damn, I felt good after this show), and it was over. Love. Go if you're in LA.
Day three was an uneventful Assscat. I donated $8 to the Bucket of Truth in thanks for the cheap laughs and Matt Besser's sweeeeet ass.
The LA comedy scene is not nearly as popular and the attendees not nearly as enthusiastic as I had thought. Lots of first-timers at every Assscat show and not one show where I wasn't able to get a front-row seat.
Blah, blah, blah.
See you again in October, place I went to.
