Your entry reminds me of an episode of Lost.

There's a scene from Lost where the characters were scared shitless. and the main character (who happens to be a surgeon) said that when he gets scared before an operation, he simply counts 1 to 5 and he lets the fear penetrate and take over his body. After the count of 5, he lets go of the emotion/fear and he faces what he has to do and goes on to save the life of the patient.

Just thought I'd sure cuz it's definitely something I keep in mind whenever I feel fear/loneliness. Although, of course, most of the time it takes more than 5 seconds. heh.
